Martina Navratilova is widely considered to be one of the greatest tennis players of all-time, having dominated the game of women's singles for a large part of the 1980s. Since retiring, the American has maintained her platform, and often speaks out about issues close to her hearts. Most recently, she slammed the lack of women and people of colour on the list of House Republican committee leaders.
On December 13, the House Republican steering committee selected chairs for the 119th Congress. Not a single woman or a person of color was named on this list, marking the first time this has happened since the 109th Congress between 2005 -2006. Last time, during the 118th Congress, three Republican women led House committees.
Recently, an X user commented on this news, writing on the platform,
“No women will lead a House committee for the first time in two decades after House Republicans revealed their list of committee leaders for the 119th Congress. No people of color were selected, either.”
Reacting to this, Martina Navratilova wrote,
“What a surprise.”
Prior to this, Navratilova had put US President-elect Donald Trump and republican voters on blast for their take on ‘grocery prices’, writing,
“Point is now the Republicans are quiet about the grocery prices. Because we do have a better economy than any other country and now trump will take credit for it while it’s still good and will accept no blame if he tanks it with his tariffs.”
Martina Navratilova approves of Joe Biden’s latest policy
While Martina Navratilova has been vocal in her opposition of Donald Trump and the Republican party, she has often shown her support for President Joe Biden and the Democratic party. Most recently, she lauded the President’s decision to cap bank overdraft fees.
The President announced the news on X, writing,
“Exorbitant overdraft fees charged by big banks – sometimes $30 or more – hit vulnerable Americans the hardest. My new rule is capping them to as little as $5.”
Navratilova reshared the post, showing her approval.
Navratilova has previously shown her support for President Biden, writing on X in October 2024,
“Biden is running the country. Thank you President Biden for doing a heckova job.”
Prior to her retirement, Martina Navratilova was one of the most dominant women's singles players the game had ever seen. During the nearly three decades she spent onon the court, she claimed a total of 59 Grand Slam titles, a record in the Open Era. 18 of these were singles Majors.
