Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has joined forces with famed author J.K. Rowling to express concern over the controversial issue of transgender inmates being housed in women’s prisons. Both women have raised alarms about the dangers faced by incarcerated women when placed in cells with transgender individuals who have a history of violent or sexual offenses.
Rowling is one of the wealthiest authors in the world with an estimated net worth of $1 billion (according to celebritynetworth.com), largely amassed through the success of the "Harry Potter" franchise.
Rowling took to X (formerly Twitter) on December 30, 2024, to share a New York Post report highlighting a case involving a transgender woman, Christopher Scott Williams, who allegedly sexually assaulted her female cellmate after being transferred to a women’s facility.
In a lawsuit filed by Mozzy Clark, a former inmate at a Washington state women’s prison, she alleges that her transgender cellmate, Christopher Scott Williams, subjected her to months of abuse, including stalking, sexual harassment, and physical threats.
Williams, who was previously convicted of child molestation and domestic abuse as a male, petitioned to be transferred to a women’s prison after claiming a gender identity as a transgender woman. Once moved, Williams made repeated threats and harassed Clark relentlessly.
Navratilova, known for her outspoken opinions on the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports, shared Rowling's tweet on the matter and added her concerns.
"How many women need to be r*ped and get pregnant before this criminality is abolished? How many???" Navratilova wrote.
Martina Navratilova supports J.K. Rowling's stance on protecting women's spaces
Martina Navratilova backed J.K. Rowling’s firm position on the exclusion of men in women’s spaces amid a U.S. political debate on transgender women using women’s restrooms.
The issue recently sparked a clash between Representatives Nancy Mace and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, with the former proposing a ban on transgender women using restrooms in the U.S. Capitol, targeting transgender Democrat Sarah McBride.
When an X (formerly Twitter) user questioned the benefits of allowing men in women’s spaces, Rowling sarcastically dismissed the idea.
"Zero. However, there's certainly a benefit to simpering that you're completely fine with it, can't see what the issue is and calling women who disagree fascists, or we wouldn't be seeing so many wealthy, famous, protected women throwing vulnerable women under the bus," J. K. Rowling wrote.
The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion showed her support for Rowling’s viewpoint by retweeting her post.
In other news, Navratilova met with J.K. Rowling and prominent feminist activists from the non-profit organization "The Lesbian Project" in July 2024. Navratilova posted a photo of the meeting and referred to Rowling as "Queen herself."
