Martina Navratilova expressed her disappointment as Donald Trump looks set to regain control of the White House. The Republican candidate has won some crucial swing states and claimed victory although the official result is yet to be announced.
American actress Bette Middler posted a quote by late American journalist H.L. Mencken where he argued that candidates who face the public don’t address a rational audience but a crowd led by emotion and a "dread of what they cannot understand."
Mencken suggested that to succeed, candidates must "bark with the pack" to resonate with this mindset, often rewarding those who are "devious and mediocre." As democracy evolves, he predicted a time when "the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
American tennis icon, Martina Navratilova, who has been critical of Trump over the past few weeks on X, reshared Middler's post amid Trump's expected success. She wrote:
"Omg… it is gutting…"
Trump has already won Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina - crucial swing states. He is officially on the verge of victory and the former President has already announced his claim in a victory speech.
“The task before us will not be easy, but I will bring every ounce of energy, spirit, and fight that I have in my soul to the job you've entrusted to me," he said.
The 78-year-old has received congratulatory messages from world leaders including India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, France's President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Martina Navratilova explains why she is against voting Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential Elections
The 2024 Presidential Elections took place on Tuesday, November 5, between Republican candidate Donald Trump, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and others. Former World No. 1 Martina Navratilova has condemned Trump on multiple occasions on social media.
In a post on X on October 21, Navratilova explained why she was against voting for the 78-year-old.
"I lived in a totalitarian authoritarian country growing up and I will not vote for that now or ever. trump is not pro women- rap*st and assaulter- he is against all things trans. A big difference. I support trans people but not male bodies in women’s sex based spaces. Simple"
This post from Navratilova is pinned on her X account adding more emphasis to her words. Several tennis personalities were heavily involved in politics in the past few weeks owing to the election fever.
Andy Roddick and Navratilova have been critical of Trump on social media. Billie Jean King had publicly endorsed Harris and co-chaired the "Athletes for Harris" campaign.
