Tennis legend Martina Navratilova recently weighed in on the FBI’s discovery of the largest-ever cache of homemade explosives in its history, found at a Virginia property. The explosives were linked to a suspect, Brad Spafford, whose alleged extremist ties raised significant concerns.
In December 2024, FBI agents raided Brad Spafford’s property in Virginia after a tip-off about his alleged involvement in stockpiling weapons and explosives. The agents discovered over 150 finished explosive devices and an unsecured backpack labeled with "#nolivesmatter," a reference to a violent far-right movement known for its extremist views.
Navratilova, a vocal critic of President-elect Donald Trump, took to X (formerly Twitter) to weigh in on the situation. She suggested that the suspect is a supporter of Donald Trump, writing:
"Not all Trump supporters are like this guy, but all guys like this are Trump supporters."
Spafford has been charged with possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle. His lawyer argued that there is no evidence to suggest that Spafford posed a significant danger. A federal judge has ordered that Spafford be monitored electronically as he awaits trial, though this decision is currently under review.
Martina Navratilova criticizes "brainwashed" Donald Trump supporters following January 6 Capitol riots comment
Martina Navratilova criticized President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters while reflecting on the January 6 Capitol riot. On that day in 2021, a group of Trump’s supporters breached the barricades and stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to halt the certification of Joe Biden's election win.
A user shared a video of the event on X, writing:
"I’m going to post this video every day so we never forget."
In response, a Trump supporter shifted the blame to the police, claiming the riot was instigated by Capitol police who fired tear gas at a peaceful crowd, causing chaos, with "planted feds" encouraging the crowd to advance.
"The riot was started by the Capitol police when they repeatedly fired tear gas into a peaceful crowd. They kept doing that, with nowhere for the crowd to go, with planted feds urging the crowd to push forward," a user commented.
Outraged by this comment, Martina Navratilova responded sharply to the supporter, writing:
"This is how brainwashed many Trump voters are."
In other news, Martina Navratilova criticized a Trump-supporting farmer upset over immigration policies. The farmer claimed their dairy business would shut down if Trump followed through on his promise to deport undocumented migrants from South Dakota.
