Martina Navratilova suggested that the anticipated changes following Donald Trump's imminent presidency influenced Joe Biden’s controversial reversal on pardoning his son Hunter.
Hunter Biden was convicted in June for lying about drug use when buying a gun. In September, he pleaded guilty in a tax case involving unpaid taxes from 2016-2019, with charges including tax evasion and filing a false return. He faced significant prison time in both cases.
In June, President Biden firmly ruled out pardoning his son, Hunter, despite ongoing legal proceedings. Biden said (via Al Jazeera):
"I said I will abide by the jury decision. I will do that and I will not pardon him."
However, in a recent statement, Biden confirmed a U-turn on his stance. He wrote in a press statement (via BBC):
"There has been an effort to break Hunter - who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me - and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough."
The decision has been backed by a statement from the White House but several Republicans and even some Democrats have criticized it. Donald Trump, who will assume the President's office in January 2025, called the decision an "abuse and miscarriage of justice" on social media.
CNN's Manu Raju reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Chris Coons, a close ally of Joe Biden, explained that the president’s decision to pardon Hunter was influenced by Trump’s appointments. According to Coons, Trump's nominees signaled a clear intent to target Hunter, which led to a significant shift in Biden's stance.
American tennis icon Martina Navratilova, who has been a firm critic of Trump, agreed with Coons' conclusions. She shared Raju's post on X and wrote:
"Exactly. The field of play completely changed this summer. trump made it clear all bets were off"

Martina Navratilova shared her reaction on X to Donald Trump's nomination of Kash Patel as FBI Director, a controversial choice due to Patel's close ties to Trump and his outspoken views.
Patel, a prominent ally during Trump's first term, had been praised by Trump. However, the decision sparked criticism on social media, with one X account calling Patel a "conspiracy theorist."
In response, Navratilova simply tweeted:
"Jesus…"
Trump won the 2024 presidential election against Democrat Kamala Harris and several other candidates. The 78-year-old will return to office alongside J.D. Vance as Vice President.
