Martina Navratilova has condemned a school shooting in California which left two children in critical condition. Two boys aged 5 and 6 were left injured by the suspected gunman who was found dead by the authorities.
Authorities are investigating a tragic shooting at Feather River Adventist School near Palermo, California, on Wednesday (Dec. 4). Sheriff Kory L. Honea revealed that the shooting occurred shortly after the gunman had a meeting with the school principal about enrolling a student.
"Shortly after concluding that meeting, the principal heard shots being fired, heard screams, and that’s when they determined or found that the students had been shot," Honea stated.
The principal described the meeting as cordial, with no indication of any threat. The injured boys were rushed to a hospital in "extremely critical condition."
The investigation is ongoing as authorities examine the suspect’s motive and background. The suspect had no known connection to the victims or the school, raising questions about whether the meeting about student enrollment was genuine or a ruse to gain access to the campus.

"Guns kill people" - Martina Navratilova advocated for gun laws in the USA like Europe to increase safety
In October 2023, a tragic mass shooting occurred in Lewiston, Maine, sparking debates about gun laws and safety in the USA. An X account shared that Maine Senator Susan Collins publicly expressed concern about the incident but cited her controversial voting record on gun control.
The discussion ignited further controversy online. One user countered calls for stricter gun laws by comparing them to banning fast food to prevent obesity, suggesting such measures would not address the root causes.
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova responded firmly, highlighting the stark contrast between the USA and other nations. She wrote:
"Common sense would dictate that guns kill people. Europe has no such problem and is safer overall than US. So yes- gun laws do work- try again."
Gun violence is a huge problem in the USA with gun laws a recurring point of debate. According to the BBC, over 600 mass shootings have taken place each year in America since 2020, and until September 2024, over 350 mass shootings have already taken place this year.
