Martina Navratilova recently agreed with Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies over the usage of words- cis-women and transwomen.
Navratilova staunchly opposes the inclusion of transgender women in women's sports. Davies too is an advocate of not allowing transgender women to compete in women's sports categories.
Recently, Davies took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to object against cis women being a subset of their own definition. She said that women did not need a prefix.
"No woman is a cis woman. We’re not a subset of our own definition. We are adult human females. A transwomen is exactly that, a transwoman. A male who identifies as a transwoman based on a feeling not a reality of actual biological sex. Women don’t need or want a prefix," Sharron Davies wrote.
Navratilova agreed to this tweet and added that she did not need or desire a prefix.
"Exactly, I don’t need nor desire a prefix," Martina Navratilova replied.
Martina Navratilova: "This is against male bodies competing as women if they identify as women"
Even though Martina Navratilova staunchly opposes trans athletes in women's sports, she is in favor of transgender people being granted civil rights. Recently, Navratilova appeared on an episode of On with Kara Swisher podcast and explained her stance.
The 18-time Grand Slam champion revealed that she wanted biological males who identify as women to compete in men's sports rather than women's sports. According to her, this would help to level the playing field.
"We are not against trans athletes. We are for women athletes to compete on as level a playing field as possible, which means the males who now identify as women, should compete in a male category and women who identify as men but don't take testosterone can compete as women. Because there is still no advantage physically over other women athletes," Navratilova said On with Kara Swisher podcast.
The 18-time Grand Slam champion mentioned that she supports trans rights at a civil level and is also not against trans athletes. Navratilova said that she was against male bodies competing in women's sports.
"I'm all for trans rights on a civil level, a hundred percent. And this is not against trans athletes. This is against male bodies competing as women if they identify as women. Many sports don't even have any mitigation, any allowance for lowering the testosterone level, et cetera," Martina Navratilova said.
