Maria Sakkari was in attendance for one of the inaugural galas to celebrate Donald Trump commencing his second spell as President of the USA. However, this development garnered disapproval from many tennis fans.

On Monday, January 20, Donald Trump officially began his second term as US President, and the day ended with the 78-year-old attending three inaugural galas. Maria Sakkari, a former World No. 3, attended one of the galas with her partner Konstantinos Mitsotakis, the son of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is currently serving as the Prime Minister of Greece. This news didn't take long to gain traction on X (formerly Twitter).

Many tennis fans, were appalled by the fact that Maria Sakkari attended one of Donald Trump's inaugural galas.

"And may she continue to lose 1st round everywhere," a fan wrote.
"So, a loser on AND off the court!" commented another.

One fan's reaction consisted of a puking emoji and a GIF indicating nausea.

Here are some more reactions to Sakkari attending an inaugural gala celebrating Trump's return to the presidency.

"Well I suppose she’s certainly not too busy making a good run in any tournaments as of late," wrote one fan.
"And we was just feeling sorry for her and all her flopping, guess we leaving her behind in January," another added.
"I actually took a screenshot of her story, cause I had a feeling that’s where she was Room looked empty af and they were trying to obscure the event," yet another fan chimed in.

Sakkari reached her career-high ranking of World No. 3 in singles in March 2022. However, the Greek, despite her promise and potential, has been plagued by inconsistencies in recent years. Her most recent on-court outing at the 2025 Australian Open ended prematurely with a shock first-round loss.

Currently ranked No. 30 in the WTA Tour singles rankings, Maria Sakkari was the 31st seed in the women's singles main draw at the 2025 Australian Open. She was drawn to face unseeded Colombian Camila Osorio in the first round.

On paper, Sakkari was the favorite. However, things played out differently on Melbourne Park's Court 3, as Osorio won the first set 6-4. The Greek leveled things up by edging the Colombian 7-6(4) in what was a close second set. However, Osorio ultimately emerged victorious after clinching the third set 6-4. It was one of four shock results from the third day of the year's first Grand Slam.

Maria Sakkari had also crashed out of the 2024 US Open in the first round after retiring mid-match due to injury.
