Former American tennis player Pam Shriver hailed Naomi Osaka and Iga Swiatek's epic second-round match at the 2024 French Open. Shriver also suggested a Danielle Collins-like run for the Japanese was a huge possibility soon while disagreeing with the Pole for 'scolding' the crowd after the match
The two four-time Grand Slam champion's match was highly anticipated by the fans, who were not disappointed as they produced an epic. After a match full of twists and turns, the top seed and the two-time defending champion came through 7-6(1), 1-6, 7-5 after two hours and 57 minutes.
Many tennis fans were in awe of the phenomenal performance put on display by these two women. Among them was former doubles World No. 1 and career Golden Slam winner Pam Shriver, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to show her appreciation for Osaka and Swiatek.
She also suggested that a possible Danielle Collins-esque run was on the cards for Naomi Osaka and also criticized Iga Swiatek for scolding the crowd after the match. Shriver felt that the only thing wrong with the match was the fact that there were empty seats.
"Wow on that match. Swiatek with another great escape in a second round in back to back majors. Maybe Osaka will have a Collins like run soon. Swiatek did not read the room well by scolding the crowd in her post match interview. Only crowd criticism should have been empty seats!," Shriver tweeted.
"I played Iga Swiatek on her best surface. I'm a hard court child" - Naomi Osaka
During the post-match press conference, Naomi Osaka confessed that she cried after the match, but said that she watched Iga Swiatek lift the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup last year while she was pregnant with her daughter.
The Japanese also said that she put up a fight against Swiatek on the latter's best surface, which was her dream, but would like to play her on the hard courts next, Osaka's forte.
"I've felt worse before, for sure. I've cried after the match. But I've seen @iga_swiatek win Roland-Garros last year while I was pregnant so I can't be too hard on myself. I played her on her best surface. I'm a hard court child."
"It was my dream just to play her. I think I did pretty well against her on her surface. I wanna play her on hard courts, my surface."
While Iga Swiatek heads on the third-round in a bid to complete a three-peat at Roland Garros, Naomi Osaka will look forward to the upcoming grass season.
