American tennis star Taylor Townsend delivered on the promise made to her son by winning her maiden Grand Slam doubles title at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Townsend partnered with Katerina Siniakova to clinch the women’s doubles crown in a thrilling final. The American had promised her son, Adyn Aubrey Johnson, that she would come back with a trophy and a party, and she delivered on both counts.
Townsend shared a moment that she had with her son with fans by posting a clip on soical media before leaving for the European grass-court campaign. In the video, which she uploaded on her Instagram stories on 15 July, she can be seen asking Adyn for hugs and telling him that she loves him.
"Give me some hugs...I love you so much. I'll see you in a couple of weeks when I get back, okay? And I'm going to do some winning. And then when I come back, we're going to have a trophy party," Townsend can be heard saying in the video.
"This was the day I was leaving… my word is everything to me. This means the world to me to be able to show him what mama did," she captioned the video.

Townsend lived up to that promise by defeating the second seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1), in the final along with partner Siniakova. The fourth-seeded pair had also upset the top seeds Elise Mertens and Hsieh Su-wei 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals.
Townsend and Siniakova had defeated Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, Leylah Fernandez and Ena Shibahara 6-2, 7-6 (3) in the Round of 16, Olivia Gadecki and Elixane Lechemia 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the second round, and Rebeka Masarova and Linda Noskova 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the opener.
Townsend also competed in the singles and mixed doubles events at Wimbledon, although without much success. She lost in the first round of singles to the 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(4), 6-1. The 28-year-old made it to the mixed doubles quarterfinals with her partner Jamie Murray, before losing 7-6(2), 6-7(7), 10-5 to seventh seeds Jan Zielinski and Hsieh Su-wei.
Townsend, who returned to the tour in 2022 after giving birth to Adyn in 2021, had never won a Grand Slam title before. She had reached two Major doubles finals at the 2022 US Open and the 2023 French Open. The American also had to overcome an ankle injury that forced her to withdraw from the 2024 French Open.

Taylor Townsend shared that her son Adyn Aubrey Johnson was her source of calmness and stability during her matches.
Talking to Prakash Amritraj on the Tennis Channel after beating Jessica Pegula 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round of the 2023 Italian Open, Townsend revealed that she felt nervous as she entered the court. However, she found her calm by thinking of her little boy.
"It was actually crazy because when I was walking on the court, and there were cameras in my face, I was thinking, ‘Hi AJ,’” she said. "It was one of those moments where I was feeling butterflies. Just thinking about him at that moment. Kind of made me settle down."
Townsend concluded her Italian Open campaign with a third-round 2-6, 6-0, 5-7 loss to China's Wang Xiyu.
