Matteo Berrettini is a big basketball fan and has consistently expressed his love for the sport. Recently, he shared his NBA pyramid, featuring legends like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Nikola Jokic, and more.
Ahead of his Australian Open campaign starting on Tuesday, January 14, Berrettini sat down with Eurosport for an interview, where he built the NBA pyramid. He confidently placed James at the very top.
The Italian, however, hesitated when deciding where to place Steph Curry, but ultimately positioned him in the second tier alongside the legendary Michael Jordan. The third tier featured Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, and Nikola Jokic. He included Dwyane Wade, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, and Dirk Nowitzki in the fourth and final tier.
Matteo Berrettini commented on his choices, saying:
"Maybe I would swap Durant for Jokic, but otherwise, I think I am very satisfied.”
He then explained his choice of LeBron James as his No. 1 pick, saying the LA Lakers star has inspired him more than even Roger Federer, as he has always preferred basketball over tennis.
"He has been the inspiration in my growth as an athlete, so more than Roger Federer and others, because I liked NBA more than tennis. It's personal,” the former Wimbledon finalist said.
As a child, Matteo Berrettini showed a keen interest in various sports beyond tennis, learning to swim, play soccer and basketball, and even practicing judo.
He has been a longtime fan of James, as evident from his 2023 interview with Red Bull, where he shared how much he looked up to the NBA legend.
"I like him as a player, but also what he does for the community, outside the basketball court,” the Italian said.
Matteo Berrettini to kick off Australian Open 2025 campaign against Cameron Norrie
Matteo Berrettini had an impressive 2024 season following his return from injury, earning the title of Comeback Player of the Year. He claimed three titles and made a remarkable leap in the rankings, climbing from outside the Top 100 to World No. 34.
Berrettini began 2025 with a positive mindset but was defeated by Jordan Thompson in the Round of 32 at the Brisbane International, his first tournament of the year. However, he's moved past that setback and arrived in Melbourne to compete in the Australian Open, which began on January 12.
Berrettini will face Great Britain's Cameron Norrie in the opening round. The two have met only once on the ATP Tour, at the Queen's Club in 2021, where the Italian triumphed in three sets.
