17-year-old Mirra Andreeva has been a phenomenon on the WTA Tour since her debut in 2023. The Russian teenager is world no. 14 and won her maiden career title last year.
Andreeva hired former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez as her coach last year. The coaching collaboration brought an immediate change in the results for the young Russian player as she had her first breakthrough at a Major, by reaching the semifinal at the 2024 French Open.
Under Martínez's tutelage, Andreeva bagged her first career title at the Iasi Open, with a win over Elina Avanesyan in the final. She reached her second career final last year as well but lost to Daria Kasatkina in three sets at the Ningbo Open.
At the Australian Open, the duo of Martinez-Andreeva were seen at their bantering best in an interview. The playful nature of the Q&A session showed the great rapport that the veteran player of the Tour shares with her young students.
When asked the secret to their joint success, Andreeva replied that she and Martinez connected well and had a familiar feeling with each other, even though the professional relationship had only started 7 months ago.
"You old people..okay No I just think that we have a lot of, a lot of things in common. Just feels like I've known her for a long time, but it's been seven months and I'm already tired." said Andreeva at the interview via X (Formerly Twitter)
The Conchita Martinez influence was on full show as Mirra Andreeva took on Moyuka Uchijima in the second round of the Australian Open. In a match that had a lot of ups and downs, the Russian won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8). She is now slated to play 23rd seed Magdalena Frech in the third round.
"I feel very comfortable telling her everything that happens in my life"- Mirra Andreeva on her relationship with coach Conchita Martinez
At the Australian Open, Mirra Andreeva opened up about the special relationship that she has with her coach, Conchita Martínez. The Russian teenager was candid in her press conference and stated that Martinez was not only her professional coach but also a close confidant with whom she could share everything.
"I feel very comfortable telling her everything that happens in my life. I don’t know if she wants to hear it, though! But I’m very comfortable sharing with her everything that’s going on.” said Andreeva (via tennisuptodate.com)
Andreeva also stated that the duo knew how to strike the balance between off-court entertainment and on-court practice.
"We let ourselves joke around and have some fun. Of course, she’s very professional; she knows when the fun is over and when we need to really put the work in, for example, on the tennis court. When we’re off the tennis court, we can have some fun, but of course, we also need to take it seriously sometimes.” added Andreeva (via tennisuptodate.com)
Andreeva has a tough draw at the ongoing Australian Open. Her only outing at the Melbourne Major before this year was the fourth-round run she had last year. However, to better her performance she might have a potential round of 16 clash with top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
