Naomi Osaka’s 2024 French Open outfit has drawn mixed reactions from tennis fans. The Japanese unveiled her kit on Sunday, May 26, when she contested her opening match on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Osaka hit the ground running at the French Open with a three-setter victory against Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti. The former World No. 1 was off to a strong start, allowing her opponent just one game in the opening set. She, however, faltered in the final game of the second set, giving Bronzetti the decisive break.

In the final set, a few jittery games cost Naomi Osaka her two-break advantage (4-0). The four-time Grand Slam champion eventually closed out the match with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win.

It was Osaka’s first win at the French Open in three years, and her first match since her opening-round loss to Amanda Anisimova in 2022. Tennis fans were curious not only about Osaka’s form on red dirt but also her outfit choice for the occasion.

Naomi Osaka, who is known for her collaborations with her clothing sponsor Nike, wore a custom studded navy-colored fit with cinched waist and white pleats peeping through the assymetrical hem.

She paired the look with a hot pink visor hat, a cropped jacket and custom kicks featuring dragons on the right and flowers on the left.

Tennis fans, though, had contrasting opinions about the former World No. 1’s look. Some fans termed Naomi Osaka’s outfit underwhelming.

"This is the most underwhelming Osaka outfit in the history of the sport," one fan wrote on X.

"Okay but nike dropped an awful custom kit for Naomi," another fan opined.

"If this is the custom kit nike came up with for naomi i really don’t want it for aryna [Aryna Sabalenka] cuzzzzzz," yet another fan wrote.

A few others were impressed by Naomi Osaka’s look and praised her ability to do justice to each of her outfits. Another feature that mesmerized tennis fans was Osaka’s hairdo. The four-time Grand Slam champion sported a stunning bubble ponytail for the occasion.

"Her kits are always on point!" one fan wrote.

"Naomi’s rg kit is gorgeous and her hair looks so nice like that ahh i love this look," another fan wrote.

"She’s really eating , she better give us a QF minimum," one fan said.

During her on-court interview after the opening match, Naomi Osaka was asked to assess her performance. She was also asked about her unique Nike shoes.

About the custom kicks, Osaka said:

"The most beautiful tennis shoes ever,” she said in her on-court interview at the French Open. "They are two different colors, and I feel like it gives me a lot of strength, which is a really good thing."

Regarding her result, the 26-year-old said that she's happy to have crossed the finish line despite the nervy performance.

"There were moments that I played pretty well. And then obviously I was really nervous so I got very tight. But I’m just glad that I was able to come back from being, I want to say in my definition – down in the third set. Pretty happy," she said.

Naomi Osaka now gears up for a potential blockbuster as she awaits the winner of defending champion Iga Swiatek and qualifier Leolia Jeanjean in the second round of the French Open.
