16th-seeded Nicolas Jarry suffered an upset on the first day of the 2024 French Open, losing to local favorite Corentin Moutet 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. Fans believe the Chilean was affected by a wild Parisian crowd during the first-round match, failing to maintain his game throughout.
Jarry went into his opener against Moutet with a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head record on the ATP Tour. However, the World No. 19 had lost in his most recent encounter with the Frenchman at the Chile Open in March. The match was notable for the crowd which caused turbulence for the entirety of the unseeded Moutet's straight-sets win, and they even booed their home-player's opponent constantly after his victory.
On the eve of Nicolas Jarry's rematch with Corentin Moutet as occasioned by the French Open draw, the latter's coach, Petar Popovic, said that the 16th seed was in for a tough outing. He went as far as to assert that there would be 'hell waiting' for Jarry.
"All in all – Sunday, he (Nicolas Jarry) is f****d! He made his own bad,” Moutet's coach told Tennis Majors. "We won that match in Santiago, but we were so disgusted with everything that we even had a conversation: 'When he comes to Paris, there will be hell waiting.' And I really hope that the hell will await, so that Jarry grows sick of tennis at least for a few weeks."
The French Open crowd, not to mention Moutet himself, made good on Popovic's promise. According to one fan on X,
"I see Moutet's camp was dead serious when saying Jarry is f****d and the court will turn into hell for him on Sunday."
Another fan pointed out the incident where a ball boy crashed into Nicolas Jarry while he was walking towards his towel between games.
"Holy crap that was the most obnoxious match in history. Moutet is insufferable, the French crowd was unbearable, the chair umpire was useless and one of the French ball boys literally assaulted @NicoJarry," the fan wrote.
Here are a few more reactions from social media:
"JARRY easily gets triggered so there was no way he was going to beat MOUTET with the backing of the rowdy French crowd," another fan wrote.
"Moutet is a rat !!! Agitating the crowds further and laughing on Nico’s serve - just horrible atmosphere for anyone playing a French," one wrote.
"Jarry got a taste of his own Santiago Open medicine," a fan said.
The unseeded Corentin Moutet brought his mercurial displays to the match as well, contributing to the Chilean's surprise defeat.
"French crowd are the worst imo.. you have to be tough to face one of their own," another wrote.
"If you’ve followed Jarry’s career, this was predictable," one fan said.
"Rome was a fraudulent tournament," another said.
Nicolas Jarry reached the final at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome
Nicolas Jarry has enjoyed a respectable season on the ATP Tour in 2024. The 28-year-old exited the Australian Open in the first round, but made up for it by finishing runner-up at the Argentina Open in February.

Jarry then reached the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters the following month, where he lost to fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev. He didn't record any impressive results during the European clay court season before a surprise run to the final of the Italian Open a few weeks ago.
The Chilean defeated top players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul en route to the summit clash, where he was denied by Alexander Zverev in straight sets. He also achieved a career-high ranking of 16 on May 20.
