Jessica Pegula has shared a hilarious anecdote about her husband Taylor Gahagen's chat with NBA legend Steph Curry and his wife Ayesha. The couple had the opportunity to speak to Curry before the 2024 US Open final.
Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka's blockbuster title clash at the New York Major proved to be a star-studded affair, with F1 star Lewis Hamilton, Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Olympians Noah Lyles, Suni Lee and Gabby Thomas gracing Arthur Ashe Stadium with their presence.
Steph Curry and his wife Ayesha also attended the highly anticipated clash, seizing the opportunity to chat with Jessica Pegula and her husband Taylor before the match.
Following her 7-5, 7-5 loss to Sabalenka in the final, Pegula shared a hilarious anecdote about her husband Taylor's iPhone being named after the NBA legend. The 30-year-old revealed that she found it "cute" that Taylor had mentioned it to Curry, who was so amused by the story that he insisted his wife Ayesha hear it as well.
"Funny story, my husband, his iPhone name is Steph Curry because he loves Steph Curry. If you connect to bluetooth or send him something or AirDrop, it's 'Steph Curry's iPhone'. So I kind of left early and he texted me and he was so excited, he didn't want to say anything," Jessica Pegula said in her post-match press conference.
"I was like, 'Please tell me you did not tell him about the iPhone thing.' He's like, 'Oh, yeah, I did.' I thought that was really cute. He was like, 'No, he loved it'. I was like, 'Did he? Or did he really think you were kind of crazy?' I guess he thought it was pretty funny and he was like, 'Oh you gotta show my wife that,'" she added.
Jessica Pegula also disclosed that this interaction was particularly special for her husband because he had been a "diehard" fan of Steph Curry since the Golden State Warriors star's college days.
"So that was a cool moment for him because he's a diehard Steph Curry fan. I think actually he first watched him at an NCAA tournament in Buffalo, so he always says he's an OG fan so that was really cool," she said.
Jessica Pegula: "Steph Curry wants to keep supporting women's sports, so it was really fun to meet him and his wife"
Jessica Pegula also opened up about her own "really cool" conversation with Steph Curry before the US Open final, disclosing that they had initially met at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, where they traded pins.
The 30-year-old also expressed her appreciation for Curry's support for women's sports, disclosing that it was "really fun" to meet the NBA legend and his wife Ayesha.
"Being able to talk to Steph, that was really cool. I met him kind of briefly at the Olympics during the opening ceremony and we traded pins. it was cool for him to come out. I guess he really wants to keep supporting women's sports and get really into it so it was really fun to meet him and also his wife," Pegula said during the same press conference.
Jessica Pegula will now turn her attention to securing a spot in the year-end championships, having climbed to fifth place in the race to the WTA Finals, scheduled to take place from November 2-9.
