Chris Evert's reportedly controversial remarks about Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff while commentating at the 2024 US Open have enraged tennis fans. Many have accused the American legend of "racism" over what they view as unfair criticism of the duo.
Gauff moved one step closer to successfully defending her title at the US Open with a dominant 6-4, 6-0 win over Tatjana Maria, booking her place in the third round. However, Osaka's hopes of clinching her third title at the New York Major were dashed as she suffered a 6-3, 7-6(5) loss to Karolina Muchova in the second round.
Chris Evert provided commentary for both matches, but her remarks garnered attention for all the wrong reasons. One fan was particularly perplexed by the 18-time Grand Slam champion's reported statement that Osaka's outfit "suits the Japanese culture."
"I like the dress… it suits her, it suits the Japanese culture" — Chrissy Evert about Naomi’s kit. Okay but what does that even mean? lmfao," the fan posted.
As Evert continued to share her thoughts on Naomi Osaka's outfit, fans accused the American of "making fun of" the bows on the former World No. 1's kit and lambasted her for her seemingly "incessant" and undue criticism of Black players.
"Naomi Osaka looks so fly 🔥 Evert always been such a racist hater, I hate when she commentates," one fan posted.
"Chris Evert is a B**CH! I never say that. What is the point of making fun of Naomi Osaka’s bow on her jacket? Is it not possible to just shut the f**k up? Why does she always do this to young black women/.. I can’t be the only one who notices this sh*t, it’s incessant!" another fan commented.
"We know Chrissie is very knowledgeable about Japanese culture," one fan wrote.
"Chrissie Evert either needs some sensitivity training or to be let go. I can't keep listening to this bs, @espn. The way she critiques Black players, with regard to the game and far outside of it, is not cool. Do something," said another.
Chris Evert also came under fire for her "spiteful" commentary during Coco Gauff's match, with fans suggesting that she displayed the same "racist" behavior in her remarks on the 20-year-old that she had shown towards Serena Williams.
"It’s bonkers. While Evert is horrible to everyone, the way she speaks about Coco is ridiculous - holding Coco to an impossible standard just to rip her apart," a fan shared.
"Coco won easily in straight sets & you would’ve thought she was about to lose the way chris evert was commentating, hater..," one fan wrote.
"Chris Evert never happier than when Coco is losing (except when it was Serena of course)," another fan chimed in.
"Evert speaks about Coco in the same way she spoke about Serena 🤨IYKYK 😒 Evert is a spiteful, racist c**t!" a fan," a fan contended.
Chris Evert sparked controversy with her concerns about Naomi Osaka being "too happy" before US Open 2024

Chris Evert recently courted controversy with her assessment of Naomi Osaka's prospects at the 2024 US Open as well. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the 18-time Grand Slam champion expressed her belief that while Osaka still possessed the skills to succeed at the New York Major, to win a Grand Slam title would also require significant confidence and focus.
Evert suggested that the Japanese might lack the "intensity" required to triumph at Flushing Meadows, raising concerns that her mental state was "too happy" and relaxed.
"I know she has the game, but it takes more than the game. It takes a lot of confidence and a lot of focus. We’ll see. She’s in a different part of her life right now where it seems she’s so calm and she’s so relaxed and happy and peaceful," Evert said.
"The mental problems haven’t really affected her. She has a child, which she is madly in love with. Sometimes when you are too happy, that can’t always be good either, I don’t know, for us to be intense and fierce," she added.
Chris Evert faced immense backlash for her comments about Naomi Osaka's emotional state, as fans were enraged over the "embarrassing obsession" with policing the 26-year-old's feelings.
