Naomi Osaka recently revealed the three movies she loved during her childhood. At the same time, the tennis star also sent out a friendly warning to the parents of girls who enjoy watching the 2009 movie ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic'.
For Osaka, 2024 brought a string of lukewarm performances. She began her season competing at the Australian Open, where she made a round of 32 exit after losing to Danielle Collins. This form followed the 27-year-old her entire year, as she was shown the door in the early rounds of all major tournaments, including Wimbledon, the French Open, the US Open, as well as the Paris Olympics.
Osaka’s best performances in 2024 were quarterfinal finishes at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open 2024 in February and the Libéma Open in June.
Now, as the tennis star enjoys a break from her competitive season, she's taking some time to interact with fans on social media, sharing with them the movies she loved during her childhood. In a post on Instagram Threads, she wrote:
“Growing up if your daughter's favorite movie was ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic' then I'm just letting you know you're about to have a big problem.”
Naomi Osaka reshared this post on her Instagram stories and wrote:
“Confessions of a Shopaholic 🤝🏾 Devil Wears Prada 🤝🏾 She's The Man. Impeccable childhood movies.”
Naomi Osaka opens up on ‘not liking” herself during her childhood
As she prepares for her return to the tennis courts in 2025, Naomi Osaka is also taking some time to explore her different interests. Most recently, she shared with fans, excerpts from a book she’s working on, revealing how she ‘didn’t like herself growing up’.
In an Instagram post, Osaka wrote:
“Growing up I never really liked myself. While that statement is bold I also wouldn't say I disliked myself either. It was strange contradiction of thought, I was existing but I didn't have a strong emotion or opinion tied to my being whether positive or negative. That being said, for some reason when I was young I knew that I potentially would've preferred to be someone else. Perhaps a pop star, or someone really famous and rich at the time.”
The tennis star went on to add that as a child she didn't realise that everyone has their own struggles, writing:
“Sadly my 11 year old mind didn't see how that could be possible with our earthly restraints so I reluctantly had no choice but to figure out how to live as the person I was born as. Looking back on it I laugh at how dramatic I was as a kid (some things never change haha), I also realize that I wasn't fully aware that everyone has their own trials and tribulations that they go through. As a kid I understand that I just saw everything at face value and didn't see the depth behind it all.”
Alongside exploring her talents as a writer, Naomi Osaka has also begun training for the 2025 season. The last time the 27-year-old won a title was in 2021, when she stormed to the top of the podium at the Australian Open. Now, as she prepares for the upcoming year, Osaka will be looking to end her long title drought.
