Four-time Major champion Naomi Osaka will face Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Belinda Bencic in the third round of the Australian Open 2025 on Friday (January 17). Both players have reached the third round of a Major for the first time since embracing motherhood.

Osaka gave birth to her daughter in 2023 and returned to the tour at the start of 2024. While she tasted modest success last year, she has already surpassed it within a few weeks in 2025. She reached the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland at the start of the year and was forced to retire from the match after winning the first set due to an injury.

Osaka defeated Caroline Garcia and Karolina Muchova, two players who had her number last year, in three sets to reach the third round. She didn't advance beyond the second round of a Major last year. Bencic gave birth to her daughter in April 2024 and returned to the tour at the end of last year.

The Swiss toppled 16th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round here and beat Suzan Lamens after that to make the third round. She leads Osaka 3-1 in the head-to-head, and won their first three matches at the Indian Wells Open, the Madrid Open, and the US Open, all in 2019.

Osaka finally put an end to her losing streak with a three-set win at the Miami Open 2022. She will aim to one-up Bencic once again, especially at a venue where she has tasted considerable success in the past. Two of her four Major titles have come at the Australian Open.

Osaka triumphed here for the first time in 2019 and attained the No. 1 ranking as well with the win. She then captured her second title in Melbourne a couple of years later. Bencic, meanwhile, counts a couple of fourth-round appearances as her best result here.
