Fans didn't enjoy Martina Hingis's commentary during the match between Iga Swiatek and Daria Kasatkina at the 2024 WTA Finals. They felt that the Swiss legend's commentary was 'unproductive' and digressed from the ongoing match.
Iga Swiatek took on Daria Kasatkina in her final group-stage match, in what was a do-or-die match for the former World No. 1. Had she lost the match, she would've been eliminated from contention for the final four at the event.
Not only did the Pole win but she also decimated the Russian, who replaced Jessica Pegula, 6-1, 6-0 in a one-sided affair.
However, fans were disappointed after listening to Martina Hingis' commentary on Tennis Channel+ and took to X to express their frustration. One fan felt that Hingis' inclusion in the commentary box took the attention away from the match the commentators were covering.
"My biggest pet peeve in sports is when there's a special guest in the commentary booth and they totally ignore the game to interview that person WTA has a really bad habit of doing that during WTA Finals, which is especially bad as it's their premiere event," a fan lashed out.
The same fan continued and mentioned how the commentators indulged in an 'unproductive' conversation whilst Iga Swiatek and Daria Kasatkina were competing in a high-stakes match.
"Like is there a more unproductive convo than talking about how Iga should potentially play a full-time doubles schedule because that's how it was back in your day?" the fan questioned.
Another fan felt that the 44-year-old needed to keep quiet during the match since it was distracting them from the match.
"I need Hingis to just shut up for a bit. So much talking over this match," the fan said.
Here are some other reactions from the fans:
"I changed from tennis channel with Tracy and Chanda yapping yo TC + only to find it worse. I was thinking Hingis would be on for a game. Horrible," a fan wrote.
"Ok, so Martina's in the "stop whining about the schedule" camp," a fan said.
"Nothing against to Hingis and Sophie but, can you just shut up??" a fan quipped.
Some fans also discussed a coaching gig that Martina Hingis mentioned she was offered.
"andreeva offered hingis a coaching gig," a fan mentioned.
"Did I hear right, was Hingis just mocking players complaints about the length of the season and then saying she was approached to coach but didn’t want to go on tour??" a fan questioned.
Iga Swiatek has been eliminated from the 2024 WTA Finals, Barbora Krejcikova clinches the Orange group
Despite Iga Swiatek's scintillating performance against Daria Kasatkina, the 2023 WTA Finals champion has been eliminated from the event due to an inspired performance from eighth seed Barbora Krejcikova.
Krejcikova faced Coco Gauff in a must-win match where a two-set win would see her topping the orange group, a three-set win would see her coming second, and a defeat would see her eliminated.
The Czech triumphed over the in-form American 7-5, 6-4 to book her place in the semifinals by topping her group. She will take on Zheng Qinwen, while Gauff will take on Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals.
Iga Swiatek has also lost the opportunity to end the year as World No. 1 and will finish behind Sabalenka.
