Though top-seeded players like Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz have continued their campaign at the 2024 Shanghai Masters without interruptions, other players have had to face the brunt of the heavy rainfall. The Masters 1000 event has continued in an indoor court which has sparked amusing reactions from fans, with many comparing the state of the court to a gymnasium.
Shanghai is facing heavy rainfall, and coupled with the lack of retractable roofs at the venue all of the matches on the outdoor courts had to be postponed.
Due to this, the organizers of the Masters 1000 event decided to hold Alexander Bublik and Roman Safiullin's second-round match at an indoor court to continue the play.
Here's a look at the court:
Fans were amused by the state of this indoor court and took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to it. One fan joked how they would want Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, who are on opposite sides of the draw, to play their final on the court shown in the clip. This would be the third final of 2024 between the two men with the first two coming at Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics.
“Need djokovic alcaraz final here,” the fan joked.
One fan was surprised by the fact that a Masters 1000 match was being held on the court shown above.
“Yes I laughed too but this is really embarrassing for an M1000. Build more stadiums with roofs ffs,” the fan commented.
Here are some other reactions from the fans.
“Medvedev couldn't return on that court," a fan joked.
“This is awful. There's a lot at stake with these matches and the players are supposed to be serious and at their best in a gym?” a fan questioned.
“I'm crying it's giving high school gym,” a fan quipped.
“This is literally an ATP 1000 event being played in like a high school gymnasium,” a fan said.
