Nick Kyrgios picking $20 million over a Grand Slam title during a chat with Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, and Steve Johnson has sparked discussions among tennis fans. The Aussie stated how a Slam 'wasn't that important'.

Though Kyrgios won the Australian Open in 2022 in doubles, he narrowly missed out on a singles title after he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final of Wimbledon the very same year.

The Aussie, who appeared on the podcast Nothing Major, was asked by Querry if he would rather have $20 million or a Grand Slam title to which Kyrgios immediately responded:

"$20 million. Are you serious?"

He was then asked between $10 million and a major title following which the amount was lowered to $5 million:

"$10 million. Right now? USD?"
"Like a Slam is basically $5 million. Yeah, okay, I'll take this."

Sock then mentioned how the Aussie would earn a hefty sum if he won the Australian Open to which Nick Kyrgios responded:

"Yeah, well, you didn't have to go into that much detail. I'm just saying a Slam's not that important."

Fans reacted to the Aussie's comments under the post. One fan stated:

"Nick ain't never winning a slam."

Another fan felt that a Slam winner from a country that hadn't seen much success in recent years would be lucrative for the individual.

“Well…if you win a slam, you will probably make 20 or at leat 10 million via sponsors (especially in countries where the last slam champion happened many years ago).”

Here are some other reactions from the fans.

“Ok Sock, similar question: ‘Pickleball Gold Medal or 10 grand’,” a fan quipped.
“For someone winning a slam means way more in endorsements. Naomi Osaka’s first slam got her about 50 million a year in endorsements. She doesn’t make that now. But, cup o noodles, Nissan, yonex, etc. Emma Raducanu’s one slam made her lifetime money. Michael Chang’s one slam made him a household name similar with Goran. Nick is already very well known, but I think he’d make way more that 5 million off of one slam,” a fan opined.
“Not a champion mentality to be honest,” a fan mentioned.
“Gimmie the slam, the money will follow. Taking the money is great but you can’t buy a grand slam with it,” a fan felt.
“Ask those other 3 guys. All would pick the slam. Thats why they have 66 between them,” a fan said.

While highlighting his list of achievements from his tennis career, Nick Kyrgios, during an October 2024 interview with CODE Sports, said that winning a Grand Slam singles title would 'shut people up'.

“I am coming back because something is keeping me around the game. I have beaten pretty much every person that has been put in front of me, made a final of a Grand Slam, won a doubles title in a Grand Slam, won multiple titles and made money," Nick Kyrgios said.
“But I think the one thing that is now on my target is a Grand Slam. I think that will be the only thing that will shut people up at the end of the day. That’ll be my deep motivation," he added.

After being on a hiatus for over a year, Nick Kyrgios will be making his return to the court at the 2025 Brisbane International.
