Nick Kyrgios continued his attack on Jannik Sinner amid the Italian's ongoing doping controversy. The Aussie has been incessantly attacking the World No. 1 and mocked one of his fans celebrating the elimination of the top seeds Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev at the 2024 US Open.
Sinner was recently involved in a huge controversy. The Italian tested positive twice for 'Clostebol', a banned drug, twice, during the Indian Wells Masters. However, he argued that the substance had entered his body via bare-handed massages from his ex-physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, who had used a healing spray, containing Clostebol, for a cut on his finger.
The ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) cleared Sinner to play as the amount of substance found was less than a billionth and deemed not performance-enhancing.
However, this verdict sent shockwaves throughout the tennis world, leaving them divided on this decision. While many were confident that the Italian would never consume any performance-enhancing drug intentionally, others felt the decision was unfair to the players who had faced stricter punishments for unintentionally consuming banned substances in the past.
Among Sinner's critics is Nick Kyrgios, who has been incessantly attacking the Italian and calling for a ban. A fan on X (formerly Twitter) was celebrating the elimination of the top seeds Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev at the ongoing US Open and posted a GIF of the Italian sipping something from a cup and then being surprised.
However, Nick Kyrgios ridiculed the fan and joked that the GIF was a reaction to testing positive for the second time.
"When it still shows up in the second test hahahahahaha… I make myself laugh."
"Everyone is free to say everything, It's okay" - Jannik Sinner refrains from responding to Nick Kyrgios' comments
During his second-round post-match press conference, Jannik Sinner was questioned about the possibility of being interviewed by Nick Kyrgios, who has been doing on-court interviews at Flushing Meadows. Sinner said he didn't want to respond to what the Aussie said since everyone is free to say whatever they want. He also mentioned that he is usually relaxed and forgets things fast.
"I don’t know," Sinner said. "I don’t want to respond on what he said. Everyone is free to say everything. It’s okay. If that is the case, let’s see. It’s gonna be different for sure," Sinner said. (at 2:09)
"I don’t know what to say. Maybe I say something now and then the reaction will be something else. I’m always quite relaxed. I’m someone who forgets things quite fast. Everyone is free to say everything. It is what it is," he added.
Jannik Sinner will play Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the 2024 US Open. The winner of their match will play Jack Draper in the semifinals.
