Nick Kyrgios has been very vocal about the doping controversy involving World No. 1 Jannik Sinner since the beginning.
In March 2024, the Italian tested positive for the anabolic steroid, clostebol. The Independent tribunal reviewed Sinner’s case and declared that the violation was unintentional in August. The contamination happened through Sinner’s physiotherapist when he applied a medicated spray which contained the prohibited substance.
The World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed against this decision. The agency wants Sinner to face stricter charges for the violation leading to a one or two-year ban. The Court of Arbitration for Sport has scheduled a hearing for April 16-17, 2025.
Kyrgios has made several comments on the Italian after he tested positive for a drug violation in March 2024. Sinner has not replied to any of the comments made by anyone until now. In the press conference ahead of the Australian Open 2025, Sinner said:
"I haven’t done anything wrong – that’s why I’m still here. I don’t think I have to answer this, to be honest … I don’t want to respond to what Nick says or what other players say."
Sportskeeda Tennis quoted this and posted it on their official Instagram handle.
Kyrgios dropped a one-word reaction on this post, taking a dig at Sinner's comments in the press conference on the doping controversy.
"lol 😭"
Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open
The defending champion will compete on January 13 at Melbourne Park. His first-round opponent is Nicolas Jarry of Chile. They have played two matches against each other and their head-to-head is tied at 1-1. The Italian is the top seed at the tournament and is one of the favourites to win the Grand Slam.
The World No. 1 has not played a single match after the Davis Cup final. Sinner did not participate in any of the warm-up tournaments ahead of the Australian Open. He explained the reason in the press conference, saying:
"Last season was very, very long. I also played in the Davis Cup, so after that you need time to rest and get everything back on track."
Sinner had a stellar 2024 season, where he won the Australian Open and ascended to the top of the rankings. Even after the doping controversy, he kept everything aside and continued to shine. He won the US Open, the ATP finals and the Davis Cup in 2024 after the doping saga.
