Nick Kyrgios has voiced his opinion on Jannik Sinner’s doping controversy. The Australian swiped at the World No. 1 speaking about the "tough time" he went through after failing his dope test.
In March this year, the Italian tested positive for clostebol, with news of his failed doping test becoming public in August. Kyrgios has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with how the ITIA dealt with Sinner’s case and has taken multiple swipes at the player, most recently after Sinner opened up about the difficulties he went through during his doping controversy, telling Esquire Magazine:
“It was a tough time. I couldn’t talk to anyone about it. I couldn’t vent or get help. All the people who knew me and watched me play understood that there was something wrong with me. I had sleepless nights, because even if you are certain of your innocence, you know that these things are complex.
Everyone immediately told the truth and that allowed me to play. But at Wimbledon, I was white. And even afterwards, my feeling with people was fearful. I went into training at the Cincinnati clubhouse and thought, ‘How are they looking at me? What do they really think of me?’ I realized who my real friends are.”
Kyrgios responded in a tweet:
“Yes. You tested for steroids. Very hard to talk to other people who aren’t.”
Sinner had a great 2024 season. He won the Australian Open, US Open, the Miami, Cincinnati, and Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 events, as well as the ATP Finals.
Nick Kyrgios throws shade at Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek as he returns to training
After Jannik Sinner’s saga, Poland’s Iga Swiatek is the latest victim of a doping controversy in the tennis world. The former World No. 1 tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ), but the ITIA ruled that she bore "no significant fault" for her failed test.
Nick Kyrgios seemed to take a shot at both Sinner and Swiatek when he took to X to write:
“Feels good getting these consecutive days training in the bank man. Wrist reconstruction and back out here, blessed. Without failing any drug tests 🙂↕️🙏🏽 be proud kygs doing it the right way 😩😂.”
Kyrgios hasn't been active on the ATP Tour for a year. He last played a match in June 2023, when he lost to China’s Yibing Wu at an ATP 250 event in Stuttgart, Germany. The 29-year-old is scheduled to make his tennis comeback next year at the Australian Open.
