Nick Kyrgios has been pretty harsh on Jannik Sinner since it became public knowledge that he tested positive for a banned substance. While the Italian was initially allowed to compete and then cleared with an appeal, the initial ruling is set to be reexamined in 2025.
Ahead of his competitive return in Brisbane, Kyrgios was asked by the media about it, and he once again didn't hold back, sharing his view on why he's so outspoken against the Italian.
"So for me when people are saying that I'm disrespectful to the sport, I think someone like that that has tried to cheat the process, and actually not done it completely on their own merit, is the disrespectful one in my opinion," he said.
Kyrgios has in the past been fined a couple of times for unsportsmanlike conduct, which for many fans is the epitome of being disrespectful to the sport. In his mind, however, cheating or attempts to cheat are far more detrimental to the integrity of the sport.
He then proceeded to add that he's outspoken mostly because he's seen far too many people lax about it, which to him makes no sense. In fairness, he's not only spoken out against Sinner but also Iga Swiatek, who also tested positive for a banned substance.
"But, yeah, I mean, I have to be outspoken about it because I don't think there's enough people that are speaking about it. I think people are trying to sweep it under the rug and saying that about the amount and all this," Kyrgios said.
"I'm not going to shut up about it anyway," he added.
"I just think the treatment has to be fair for everyone" - Nick Kyrgios
Being outspoken about issues is nothing new for Nick Kyrgios. He's done it in the past, calling Novak Djokovic a 'tool' for his Adria Tour during the COVID pandemic. The Aussie calling out players like this is nothing new, but he finds that the integrity of the sport is at stake.
"I just think the treatment has to be fair for everyone. I just think that it's been handled horrifically in our sport. Two world No. 1s both getting done for doping is disgusting for our sport. It's a horrible look. Yeah, the tennis integrity right now, and everyone knows it, but no one wants to speak about it, it's awful. It's actually awful. And it's not okay," Kyrgios told the media in Brisbane.
His comments have been called out by plenty of fans who think they have gone too far and that he's obsessed with Sinner. Kyrgios would disagree as he also called out Iga Swiatek for the same thing, and being outspoken on issues is a fairly consistent thing throughout his career.
