Nick Kyrgios has shared his perspective on Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray's coaching partnership. Kyrgios offered his assessment after the heartbreaking conclusion to the Serb's campaign at the 2025 Australian Open.
Djokovic stunned the tennis world when he announced his decision to hire his former rival Andy Murray as his coach for his quest to win his 25th Grand Slam title at this year's Australian Open. The duo's partnership showed promise, as the Serb made a stellar run to the semifinals of the Melbourne Slam with an impressive win over Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.
Following his triumph over Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic shared a warm embrace with Murray and later expressed his appreciation for the Brit's support and dedication to his career, disclosing that he was "very grateful" for his presence. However, the 37-year-old's Australian Open campaign ended in the semifinals, as he was forced to retire mid-match against Alexander Zverev due to a muscle tear in his left leg.
Despite the devastating outcome, tennis journalist Scott Barclay asserted that Djokovic and Murray's first coaching stint together was "incredible."
"Can I just say that as a first tournament as coach, I think Andy Murray was f**king incredible," Barclay posted on X.
Barclay's post caught the attention of Nick Kyrgios, who wholeheartedly expressed his agreement with the journalist's assessment.
"Absolutely- one thing we can agree on 👀❤️," Kyrgios commented.
Despite the praise for his coaching partnership with Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic has disclosed that its future remains uncertain. In his post-match press conference at the Australian Open, the 37-year-old disclosed that he would give his "positive feedback" to Murray after they both overcame the bitter disappointment of the circumstances surrounding his exit from the Major.
"We're still hot-headed and disappointed, so it's kind of hard to switch the page and start talking about what the next steps are. I think we both need to cool off a little bit and we'll have a chat," the Serb said.
"It feels a little embarrassing" - Andy Murray on being credited for Novak Djokovic's success at Australian Open
In an interview with Eurosport after Novak Djokovic's devastating mid-match retirement at the Australian Open, Andy Murray humbly admitted that he found it "embarrassing" to be credited for the Serb's success during his campaign in Melbourne.
"At times it feels a little bit embarrassing that, because of my relationship with Novak, how much people talk about that, or when there’s a good result or a good performance, that it’s because I’ve helped him," Murray said.
Instead, Murray graciously credited the 24-time Grand Slam champion's longtime coaching team for their incredible job and expressed gratitude to them for the warm welcome they extended to him.
"I’m fully aware that the team that is with him has done an incredible job over many, many years to allow him to still be competing at this level at the age that he’s at. They’ve all been really, really helpful to me. They really welcomed me into the team. It’s been great to be a part of," he added.
Andy Murray also bemoaned the "unfortunate finish" to Novak Djokovic's Australian Open campaign, especially after the Serb's "amazing performance" against Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, which the Brit described as "one of the best matches that he's seen live."
