Nick Kyrgios expressed feeling 'heartbroken' after a photo surfaced of Lleyton Hewitt's son, Cruz, alongside Jannik Sinner at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. This marks the latest in a series of jibes Kyrgios has directed at Sinner, following the latter's involvement in a doping controversy.
Sinner recently arrived in Melbourne and held his first practice session with Cruz Hewitt as he prepares to defend his Australian Open title. Images and videos from their session at Rod Laver Arena were shared widely on social media.
Cruz added a heartwarming touch by posting a "before and after" on Instagram, pairing a photo from their practice with an older image of a younger Cruz alongside Sinner.
Nick Kyrgios, however, could not hide his feelings upon seeing Cruz's post with Sinner. Commenting on the Instagram post, Kyrgios wrote:
"Love ya Cruz but this is wild 😢"
"Thought we were boys 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔"
"Cooked post 💉"
The 29-year-old hinted at his disappointment while taking a subtle jab at the World No. 1 amid the ongoing doping controversy.
Kyrgios has consistently targeted Sinner since the Italian's failed drug tests were revealed in August. The World No. 1 tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug Clostebol twice in March.
While the ITIA initially cleared Sinner of any wrongdoing, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) later reopened the case, appealing for a two-year suspension. The matter remains unresolved and is set to be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Nick Kyrgios reveals why he continues to be outspoken about Jannik Sinner following his doping controversy
During a press conference at Brisbane International on December 28, 2024, Nick Kyrgios asked about his repeated criticism of Jannik Sinner. The Aussie explained his perspective and emphasized his commitment to competing fairly, even during his two-year injury layoff, despite options to speed up recovery.
Highlighting the importance of integrity in the sport, Kyrgios stated:
"So for me when people are saying that I'm disrespectful to the sport, I think someone like that that has tried to cheat the process, and actually not done it completely on their own merit, is the disrespectful one in my opinion."
He expressed frustration over what he sees as inconsistent handling of doping cases, underscoring his intent to continue speaking out:
"I'm not going to shut up about it anyway... That's just my honest thoughts."
Kyrgios recently returned to professional tennis in Brisbane and won a doubles encounter partnering Novak Djokovic. The pair lost in the second round while Kyrgios faced a first-round defeat in singles. He and Jannik Sinner will both be competing at the Australian Open next.
