Nick Kyrgios has recently canceled his practice session with Novak Djokovic due to an abdominal strain. This development has raised concerns about his fitness ahead of the 2025 Australian Open which begins on Sunday.
The 29-year-old has not competed in a Grand Slam since the 2022 US Open due to a series of wrist and knee injuries that required surgery. Kyrgios returned to the ATP Tour at the 2025 Brisbane International, where he partnered with Novak Djokovic in the doubles category, reaching the second round. His singles campaign ended early with a first-round exit after being outclassed by the big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Kyrgios was expected to participate in an exhibition event alongside Djokovic on Thursday. However, on Wednesday morning, the 29-year-old announced on his Instagram story that he would not be able to play.He revealed an ultrasound confirmed an abdominal strain, leading him to rest and prioritize recovery for the Australian Open.
“Unfortunately won't be able to play my good friend @djokernole this Thursday on the 9th as I've had an ultrasound on my abdominal and have a grade 1 strain. Will be resting and doing everything I can to be ok by the AusOpen.” - Nick Krygios said
Kyrgios had earlier cast doubt on his Australian Open participation following his match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the Brisbane International, stating that while he felt physically good, he experienced some discomfort in his wrist.
“I felt relatively pretty good physically, My legs and my body felt really good. I felt fit and I'm in great shape, but obviously felt some discomfort with the wrist.” He said
The last time Kyrgios competed in the Australian Open was in 2022, where he was defeated in the second round by eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev.
Nick Kyrgios could miss Australia's Davis Cup clash against Sweden
Nick Kyrgios’s latest injury also jeopardizes his participation in the Davis Cup. He was included in Australia’s team for their Davis Cup clash against Sweden, scheduled for January 31 and February 1 in Stockholm, Sweden.
Should he participate, it would be the first time the former World No. 13 has played in the tournament since 2019, when Australia reached the quarterfinals.
Australia’s Davis Cup captain, two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt, selected Kyrgios alongside Jordan Thompson, Thanasi Kokkinakis, and World No. 8 Alex de Minaur as part of the team.
Australia is the second most successful nation in Davis Cup history, clinching the title 28 times and finishing as runners-up 21 times, behind only the United States, which has won the title 32 times.
