Nick Kyrgios expressed his disappointment with the current state of tennis after Max Purcell became the latest player to get caught up in a doping controversy. Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek's recent cases have sent the tennis world into a frenzy and their verdicts have become a huge topic of debate.

Purcell had entered a voluntary provisional suspension on December 12 under tennis' anti-doping regulations. In a statement released by the Aussie on December 23, he said that he had received an IV infusion of vitamins above the allowable limit, without his knowledge. He is barred from competing, coaching, and taking part in tennis activities until further action.

Kyrgios has vehemently opposed Sinner and Swiatek's 'No Significant Fault or Negligence' verdicts for how easily the two stars have been let off the hook. He took to X (formerly Twitter) on December 23 to claim that tennis was 'in the mud', given the sudden influx of doping controversies.

"Gee wiz our sport is in the mud at the moment," the Aussie tweeted.

Kyrgios' incessant attack on Sinner hasn't been appreciated by tennis fans, some of whom have filed a petition asking the ATP to reprimand the Aussie. The 29-year-old's comments on a potential clash against the Italian at the Australian Open went viral, where he said that he would look to cause an 'absolute riot'.

During his appearance on the Nothing Major podcast a week ago, Nick Kyrgios said that it was unfair that players of Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek's caliber were taking performance-enhancing drugs and highlighted how he would never partake in such an activity.

"Honestly, it's nothing personal. Like, I've got nothing personal on Iga. I just think that it should be a level playing field for everyone and that's what pisses me off. Because I know these guys it feels like they already have an advantage because they're just Gods and then taking all these other performance enhancing drugs just like for me, it makes me angry because I know that me personally, I've never done it and I won't ever do it," Nick Kyrgios said.
"Then this guy is rubbing cream all over his body that gives him (referring to Jannik Sinner) some crazy aura. It's not fair. That's why I'm angry about it," he added.

Kyrgios also talked about how what severely 'pissed' him off about the whole ordeal,

"Once you get caught you can't act like the victim. That's what pisses me off even more. I'm like, 'hold on a second'." Kyrgios said.

Amid all the controversy, Nick Kyrgios is set to make his return to the tour at the 2025 Brisbane International, following which he will compete at the Australian Open. The Aussie has been out of action for well over a year due to various knee and wrist injuries but sent out a bold message to the tour ahead of his return.
