Nick Kyrgios has made a rather bold claim, saying that he's better than Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic when it comes to one particular aspect of tennis. Having played multiple times against the 'Big 3' and seen them up close, the Aussie was confident enough to come up with this opinion.
Kyrgios is one of the very few players to have wins against all three members of the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic trinity. However, he never attained the dizzying heights he was predicted to reach, topping out as a Grand Slam finalist and reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 13.
Regardless, the 29-year-old hasn't lost his self-assurance. In an interview with the 'Let's Trot' podcast, Nick Kyrgios expressed his belief that he has a higher tennis IQ than the fabled trio and that he would pick himself in that particular area over them.
As for justification as to why he thinks he has a better tennis IQ, Kyrgios pointed to his achievement of reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022 without a coach in his team, which he doesn't think anyone can repeat.
"I've played against Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Murray. I have a higher tennis IQ than them. I don't know if anyone in the history of tennis has reached the Wimbledon final without a coach. So, as far as IQ is concerned, I would choose myself," Nick Kyrgios said.
The Aussie is currently sidelined by injury for a long time but is expected to be back in action starting next year at the Brisbane International.
Nick Kyrgios' head-to-head record against Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic
Nick Kyrgios and Roger Federer met seven times on the ATP Tour, with Federer leading 6-1. Kyrgios' lone win came at the 2015 Madrid Open, in their very first career meeting.
Kyrgios and Nadal, meanwhile, met nine times, with Nadal leading 6-3. The duo were set to face each other in the semi-finals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, but the Spaniard withdrew due to injury.
Meanwhile, the Aussie has a winning record against Novak Djokovic, one of only a handful of players to do so. He leads 2-1 against the Serb in their head-to-head, winning their first two matches in 2017. However, it was to Djokovic that he succumbed in the final at Wimbledon in 2022.
