Over the past few months, Nick Kyrgios has been vocal about his opinions on the Jannik Sinner doping controversy. Most recently, the Australian reacted to the news of the World No.1’s CAS hearing beginning this April, taking issue with the fact that it will take place behind closed doors.

Jannik Sinner tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance, twice in March last year. However, the Italian was allowed to continue playing in tournaments as he appealed his provisional suspensions, and the news of his failed tests was only made public in August 2024.

While the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) cleared the US Open champion of any wrongdoing, the WADA (World Anti-Doping Association) challenged this decision and launched an appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

On Friday, The CAS announced that Jannik Sinner’s hearing would take place behind closed doors on April 16 & 17. Reacting to this news, Nick Kyrgios wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

“Why is it behind closed doors? If you did nothing wrong then let us have the transparency 🤷🏽‍♂️.”

In a separate post, the Australian added,

“At least we know it’s behind closed doors this time 😭😂 this is all so shady haha.”

Ever since the news of Jannik Sinner’s failed doping tests became public, Nick Kyrgios has been consistently vocal in his criticism of the Italian. While several within the tennis community disapproved of Kyrgios's comments about the Italian, Novak Djokovic expressed his support for the Australian's frustrations.

Speaking to the media during the Brisbane International, Djokovic said:

“We live in a world where everyone has the right to express themselves, especially on social media. Nick has spoken a lot about the whole Jannik doping case, and he's right about the transparency and the inconsistency of the protocols and the comparisons between the various cases. We have seen many players in the past, and also currently, who have been suspended for not even having undergone anti-doping tests and for not having communicated their whereabouts, and some lower-ranked players who have been waiting for their cases to be resolved for more than a year.”

Pleased with the Serb's support, Nick Kyrgios took to X to give his reaction to Djokovic's comments and wrote:

“Goat has spoken.”

At the Brisbane International, Nick Kyrgios officially returned to tennis after more than a year away from the courts. His singles campaign at the event saw him knocked out in the round of 32 by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. He also partnered Novak Djokovic for the doubles event, with the duo making it to the round of 16.

Despite the latest injury concerns for the former World No. 13, Nick Kyrgios is expected to participate in his first Major since 2022. He will start his Australian Open 2025 campaign with a first-round clash against Jacob Fearnley on Monday, January 13.
