Nick Kyrgios is one of the four most marketable athletes in Australia, as per a poll conducted by Code Sports, which ranked the country's top 50 marketable athletes on a scale of 0 to 100.
Australian men's cricket team captain Pat Cummins tops the list, followed by women's football superstar Matilda Sam Kerr and Josh Giddey, who plays for Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA. Australia’s queen of surfing Stephanie Gilmore rounds out the top five.
The 100 points were broken down into three categories:
- 40 personal brand points, which includes their authenticity, overall perception and risk factor
- 30 audience and reach points, including their social media following and relevance outside and within Australia
- 30 economics points measuring their market demand and growth potential.
NBA star Patty Mills (number six), cricketers Marnus Labuschagne (number seven) and Steve Smith (number eight), tennis star Alex de Minaur (number nine) and Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo (number 10) round out the top 10.
Kyrgios, one of tennis' most talented yet controversial players, made the top four despite charges of assault by his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari for an incident in 2021. The charges have been dismissed by a magistrate, and the player apologized to Passari for his conduct, citing mental health issues.
Nick Kyrgios not in Monte Carlo entry list
Nick Kyrgios hasn't played this year due to injury. He withdrew from the Australian Open due to a knee injury and underwent surgery in Canberra.
The Australian subsequently pulled out of Indian Wells and Miami to recover from the injury. He's unlikely to be fit in time for Monte Carlo next month and is missing from the tournament's entry list.
Kyrgios had previously said that he would like to play Roland Garros, as his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi wants to visit Paris. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist said:
"Next year I am going to go to Paris. I’m announcing that now, I’m going to the French Open. haven’t played that in four years so I’ll be back next year. My girlfriend just wants to see Paris. I mean, I’ll play the French Open as well.”
It's currently unknown if the Australian will be fit in time for the year's second Grand Slam or feature in the other claycourt tournaments in the lead up to Roland Garros.
The World No. 24 has not played competitively since withdrawing from the Japan Open in October last year due to pain in his knee.
