Tennis faced doping scandals in 2024 with Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek among others, but Nick Kyrgios, who has been outspoken on their cases, expressed confidence in his strict adherence to anti-doping rules.
The issue of doping in tennis has dominated headlines recently, with high-profile cases involving Jannik Sinner, the current World No. 1, and Iga Swiatek, who was at the top of the rankings when her tests occurred last year. Both players failed doping tests, sparking widespread discussion and scrutiny within the sport.
Kyrgios has been particularly vocal about these cases, often expressing his concerns about the integrity of the game and the potential repercussions for players.
On Friday, January 10, during a pre-tournament press conference at the 2025 Australian Open, the Aussie was asked about the day-to-day reality of anti-doping measures. Kyrgios acknowledged the ongoing conversation around the topic but emphasized his own experience with the system.
"But for me, to answer your question, like, I mean, I've been tested four times in the last couple months. I got tested in my home three days ago, so..." Nick Kyrgios said.
"For me, it hasn't been a problem at all in my career. I've been on the tour now for 10-plus years. For me, I'm not worried at all 'cause I know that I'm really, really on top of what's going on in my team. I'm very confident in myself that I'm not going to be accidentally putting something in my system," he added.
Sinner tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug called Clostebol twice in March. His failed drug tests were made public in August with the ITIA giving him a no-fault verdict. However, the case is currently being handled by CAS after WADA appealed ITIA's ruling and sought a two-year ban.
Meanwhile, Swiatek tested positive for a substance called trimetazidine in August. Her failed drug tests were made public in November and the Pole received a one-month suspension.
Kyrgios remains in the controversial spotlight for repeatedly taking shots at Swiatek and Sinner over their doping scandals, continuing his remarks on social media despite criticism.
