Nick Kyrgios being handed a straight-sets loss in the opening round of the 2025 Australian Open has sparked discussions among tennis fans. The Aussie had slammed Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek's doping verdicts on social media in the past few months. His method garnered a lot of negative reactions from tennis fans.
Kyrgios returned to tennis after over a year's hiatus due to various injuries. His comeback didn't go as planned as he lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the 2025 Brisbane International opening round. His Australian Open campaign also saw him take another quick exit after Jacob Fearnley defeated him 7-6(3), 6-3, 7-6(2).
It is worth noting that the home favorite struggled with some abdominal issues during the match. Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to Kyrgios' loss.
"Nick should spend more time on the court and in the gym instead of being a troll on social media. Karma is a b*tch," one said.
“Much ado about nothing, Nick. Now you can go back to being a commentator or writing flame posts on social media,” another wrote.
"It is objectively embarrassing to have chatted as much shit as Nick Kyrgios did prior to this tournament, just to go out in the first round without winning a set," a third fan said.
Here are some other reactions from tennis fans.
"If only Nick Kyrgios focused as much on tennis as he does on tweeting," a fan wrote.
"Nick Kyrgios (part-time tennis player) thought he could go toe-to-toe with the GOAT Jannik Sinner in off-court Twitter feuds. Shoulda focused on his on-court game instead I suppose…," another said.
"Nick Kyrgios is out!!! Beautiful. Maybe that preparation of abusing everyday humans on this app wasn’t so good. Not gonna miss the clown 🤡 show," yet another wrote.
Kyrgios' scathing attacks on Sinner and Swiatek led to some tennis fans petitioning the ATP to reprimand the Aussie.
"The only thing that will shut people up" - Nick Kyrgios on his goal to win a Grand Slam in singles
During an interview with CODE Sports in October 2024 ahead of his return to tennis, Nick Kyrgios said his big motivation was to win a Grand Slam in singles. He felt that winning it would "shut" his doubters up:
“I am coming back because something is keeping me around the game. I have beaten pretty much every person that has been put in front of me, made a final of a Grand Slam, won a doubles title in a Grand Slam, won multiple titles and made money. But I think the one thing that is now on my target is a Grand Slam. I think that will be the only thing that will shut people up at the end of the day. That’ll be my deep motivation."
Kyrgios came closest to winning a Grand Slam in 2022 when he reached the Wimbledon final. However, he was defeated by Novak Djokovic, who overturned a one-set deficit to clinch the match in four sets.
