Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios recently took another jibe at Iga Swiatek. The incident occurred after Swiatek's notebook from the 2024 French Open surfaced while representing Poland in the United Cup Final.
Kyrgios has repeatedly criticized the doping verdict that favored Swiatek. In August 2024, the 23-year-old tested positive for trace amounts of the banned substance trimetazidine during an out-of-competition drug test. As a result, she was provisionally suspended for three weeks from September 12 to October 4. Furthermore, the three weeks she had already spent as a penalty were counted, meaning she was required to complete an additional month of suspension. She was cleared to compete starting December 4 of the previous year.
Team Poland, led by players like Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz, recently reached the final of the United Cup. However, Team USA ultimately defeated them, as Taylor Fritz triumphed over Hurkacz 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4), and Coco Gauff outclassed Swiatek 6-4, 6-4.
Moreover, after dropping the first set to Gauff, Swiatek was seen with her signature notebook, which she is known to keep during matches. Tennis journalist Bastien Fachan shared the post on X.
Kyrgios, however, took a subtle jab at Swiatek, seemingly referencing her doping controversy, suggesting that her efforts were lacking despite "the other help."
"And with all the other help 😅"
Gauff lost a 2-0 lead in the first set but regrouped to take control of the match against Swiatek—moreover, the World No. 2 committed 19 unforced errors during her defeat.
"Not to overthink anything but to have these keywords": When Iga Swiatek revealed what she writes in her notebook
In an interview with Prakash Amritraj on Tennis Channel last year, Swiatek opened up about the contents of the notebook she carries during her matches. The Polish player shared that she writes down her tactics and a few key reminders to help her refocus whenever she faces challenges.
I just write my tactics there and also some keywords that I want to remember when I sometimes struggle. Not to overthink anything but to have these keywords and to focus on them, so it depends. Mostly, it's tactics," she said (via Lob and Smash).
Despite the doping controversy, the 23-year-old demonstrated remarkable resilience on the court last year, securing four tour titles in Doha, Indian Wells, Madrid, and Rome and a Grand Slam triumph at Roland Garros. Swiatek also finished the year with an outstanding 61-9 win-loss record.
