Nick Kyrgios recently suggested that loud fans go a long way in marketing tennis to casual fans. The Aussie, however, has been taken apart by tennis fans for his opinion.
Kyrgios recently got into a spat with Aussie legend Pat Cash, who had criticized the local fans at the Australian Open for being too loud and provoking. Kyrgios was unhappy with the former Wimbledon champion putting the Melbourne crowd on blast, asserting that he was "another old head that has no idea how marketing works".
"Absolutely stupid comment by another old head that has no idea how marketing or how things work in today's day and age. You need entertainment. We need the crowds to feel part of the sport," Nick Kyrgios told Daily Mail.
"We need entertainment. We need people having beers and the players loving it. We need human interaction. We're human, not robots. We need it to be like that," he added.
Kyrgios' comments were not met kindly by the tennis community on Reddit. One fan claimed that the 28-year-old's understanding of marketing was limited to edgy gimmicks.
"Kyrgios thinks marketing = making an a** out of yourself so everyone just feels compelled to have a look? I mean shit he may be right in this day and age," the fan wrote.
Another fan, meanwhile, called the 28-year-old a hypocrite and implored the tennis media to "stop giving him air time".
"Another case of Kyrgios being a hypocrite... Stop giving him airtime," they wrote.
Another brought out the receipts to further illustrate the Aussie's hypocrisy. They claimed that while he never missed a step at grating others; he had cried foul when the English crowd was harsh towards him at Wimbledon 2022:
Here are a few more reactions from tennis fans:
Nick Kyrgios once lashed out at the Australian crowd for being too loud
Nick Kyrgios admittedly didn't have any problem with loud fans at the Australian Open, yet he called them "stupid" for how noisy they were during his doubles semifinal in 2022.
Kyrgios and his partner Thanasi Kokkinakis were leading the team of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos by a set when one of the front-row fans got on the 28-year-old's nerves. They had apparently shouted just before the Aussie's serve at break point down.
Nick Kyrgios even showed a middle finger to the fan in question. The altercation, however, didn't impact the match's result, as Kyrgios and Kokkinakis prevailed in straight sets.
The raucous crowd in Melbourne was again behind the Aussies in the final regardless of the former World No. 13's reaction to them in the match prior. However, they did break out into loud applause when the duo secured their maiden Major doubles title.
