Amanda Animisova has posted a social media image of her relaxing with Australian Open rival Emma Raducanu at the Singapore Open player party. The pair shared a controversial second-round match at this year's Melbourne tournament, which saw the British player come through with a 6-3, 7-5 win in a match that featured an early injury stoppage.
Some of Animisova's fans suggested afterwards that Raducanu had exaggerated a lower back issue to break up play when Anisimova was 3-0 up in the first set. At that juncture, Raducanu called for a physio and received on-court attention. When play restarted, the Brit went on to win the next 3 games and then the set.
Before the match, the two players had spoken of their friendship, and regardless of the controversy, nothing has changed. Anisimova pictured them together on her Instagram account, accompanied by two words:
"Player party"
The 23-year-old American ranked World No. 35, and 22-year-old Raducanu, the World No. 61 and former US Open champion, clearly enjoy each other's company. Before their match, Anisimova discussed their friendship with Eurosport:
"She’s a friend of mine. We’ve both been around the tour. We’re the same age. We also have a mutual friend, Priscilla Hon. We’ve hung out a few times all together. She’s a nice girl. She’s always bringing a good energy into the room. Also an amazing competitor."
Amanda Anisimova didn't agree with her fans that Emma Raducanu's injury was faked
Anisimova clearly doesn't agree with her supporters who were certain Raducanu had used underhand tactics to get ahead in the match. One stated on social media:
"The gamesmanship was epic. Completely disrupted Anisimova's momentum with the signature fake MTO."
Another chimed in:
"Honestly that was disgusting to watch. Amanda had all the momentum and then Emma fakes being 'hurt' down 0-3 in the set. Emma has ZERO class."
Their second-round match was indeed largely dominated by Raducanu's back issues - but despite the fan response, the injury was well-known before the tournament began. Raducanu had pulled out of the Auckland Open after bending to lace her shoes and feeling a back spasm - which then caused her to miss two weeks of training.
She did not appear to suffer any further complications in her third-round match with World No. 2 Iga Swiatek, despite surrendering meekly in quick time, 1-6, 0-6. Both Animisova and Raducanu are still young and have a great future in the game, and it's good to see their friendship endure a topsy-turvy Australian Open tournament for them both.
