Serena Williams hosted the 2024 ESPY Awards this week and made a hilarious jibe at Drake over his recent beef with Kendrick Lamar. The American also danced to Lamar's diss track 'Not Like Us' to raucous applause from the crowd in attendance.
Williams, rumored to be dating Drake in 2015, couldn't help her humourous self while talking about the recent beef that has set the hip-hop industry on fire. The 42-year-old insisted that no one should feud with Lamar, who released five diss tracks this year targeted at the Canadian pop star.
She also joked that the Compton-based rapper's diss track had influenced even Drake's hometown to grow in distaste of him before hilariously crip-walking to its melody.
"And if I've learned anything this year, not a single one of us, not even me, should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar. He will make your hometown not like you," Serena Williams said during ESPYs 2024. "The next time Drake sits courtside at a Raptors game, they're gonna Forrest Gump him, seats taken."
Earlier this week, Serena Williams was asked to give her thoughts on Not Like Us while speaking at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture. The 23-time Major winner responded it was "the hit of the summer". The American then admitted that she would love to crip-walk to the song, and she made good on that promise days later at the ESPYs.
"I love that song. It's like the hit of the summer. When they play that jam, I'm jamming. That jam is jamming," Williams said during her appearance at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans earlier this week. "You definitely Crip walking in that song. It's so cool what he did though. Bringing everyone to the stage? That was incredible... I couldn't believe it."
"Serena Williams, your husband a groupie" - When Drake dissed the American's husband Alexis Ohanian in a song
For those unaware, Drake took shots at Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian in the track 'Middle of the Ocean' from his 2022 album Her Loss. The five-time Grammy winner called the Reddit co-founder a "groupie" in his verse.
Here are the lyrics to the song:
"Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie, He claim we don't got a problem but no, boo, it is like you comin' for sushi."
Ohanian would reply to the shade thrown at him in a post on X, claiming he had no qualms with being a groupie for his family.
"The reason I stay winning is because I’m relentless about being the absolute best at whatever I do—including being the best groupie for my wife & daughter," he wrote on X.
Serena Williams retired from pro tennis at the 2022 US Open with 23 Major titles and a prize money of nearly $95 million to her name. The American played her last match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, going out 5-7, 7-6(4), 1-6 to Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.
