Fans perceived John McEnroe’s interview with Jannik Sinner after his second-round win at the 2025 Australian Open as lacking depth and relevance. Despite McEnroe’s extensive experience in tennis media, many viewers were seemingly left frustrated with his questions during the interview.
On Thursday, January 16, Sinner got the better Tristan Schoolkate in the second round of the ongoing Melbourne Slam. It was the first time since the Shanghai Masters that Sinner dropped a set, ending a streak of 29 consecutive set wins. Despite the setback, Sinner quickly regained his rhythm and clinched the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
John McEnroe conducted Sinner's post-match on-court interview. The American's initial question to Sinner about whether he knew Schoolkate from the juniors seemed off-mark, as Sinner had little junior experience.
Next up, he mentioned that Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev dropped sets against "a couple of unknowns," which did not sit well with fans on X.
"McEnroe is a disaster in Tennis media. Crucial commentary and never prepared for these huge opportunities," one fan wrote.
"McEnroe show a lack of some basic stuff on tour but still he is expert on Eurosport. My God," another fan wrote.
"Does he know anything?" a third fan asked.
Here are some more fan reactions to McEnroe interviewing Sinner.
"I HAVE NO RESPECT FOR JOHN MCENROE, HE IS THE WORST COMMENTATOR ON TV.. HIS VOICE IS PURE NOISE.. HIS ANALYSIS IS SHALLOW.. HE HAS NO WISDOM.. HE DOESN'T HAVE THE BRAIN.. AND HE IS A NOVAK SHOES LICKING GUY.. I HOPE THEY REMOVE HIM FROM TV FOREVER," one fan wrote.
"Mcenroe is unbearable," another fan wrote.
"McEnroe is a dinosaur. He is insufferable," yet another fan wrote.
John McEnroe asks Jannik Sinner for advice on controlling emotions
During the on-court interview, John McEnroe, known for his aggressive and fiery on-court demeanor, asked Jannik Sinner for advice on how to control emotions.
"I am pretty emotional. Generally, I have been in Italy, Italians express themselves. You are able to control yourself so well, I wanna know how you do it," McEnroe said.
Sinner responded with a chuckle, pointing out that he and the seven-time Grand Slam champion were quite different in this regard.
"We can say that we are a bit different, me and you (laughs). But it shows that everyone is different, everyone has their own mentality, I have mine, and I have to say I am quite happy with my one," Sinner said.
McEnroe seemed confused, prompting Sinner to laughingly suggest they leave the conversation at that.
In the third round, Jannik Sinner is pegged against Marcos Giron. It will be the second encounter between the pair with the World No. 1 winning their last match in Shanghai in 2023.
