Alexander Zverev got the better of Casper Ruud in the 2024 French Open semifinal. Incidentally, on the same day, the German player's domestic abuse allegations case was closed by the court as he agreed to settle. Fans were displeased with the ATP celebrating the German's success.
Zverev failed at the semifinal stage in Roland-Garros for the past three years. Last year, Ruud defeated him under Court Philippe-Chatrier's lights but the fourth seed made sure history did not repeat itself. He got his revenge by taking out two-time finalist Rudd 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
The 27-year-old overcame a slow start to defeat an ailing Ruud. The World No. 7 even received treatment in the third set for a stomach issue.
After Zverev's win, the official X account of the ATP Tour posted a collage of the winning and losing sides of the semifinal. On one side, Zverev was roaring in celebration while on the other side, Ruud had his head down in despair.
Fans slammed the ATP for posting about the German's success when his domestic abuse trial ended on the same day. Notably, there was no verdict announcing him guilty.
"And there's the side that doesn't have the promised domestic abuse policy. Shame on you," one fan wrote.
"You have really no shame!!! Still promoting this woman beater!!!" another fan wrote.
One fan asked, "How is your domestic abuse policy review doing?"
Here are some more fan reactions calling out the ATP and mentioning Alexander Zverev's domestic abuse allegations.
"Ignoring the fact that poor Casper was physically unwell.. Yeah definitely two sides.. One has domestic violence accusations and is allowed to have his dream life," one fan wrote.
"The guy on the left abused his ex. You forgot that part!" another fan said.
"You’re really going with we let someone who just settled a domestic violence case play vs. we let norovirus spread among the players as the two sides of the sport. I suppose that is tennis," wrote yet another.
Alexander Zverev will face Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open 2024 final
Carlos Alcaraz faced Jannik Sinner in the other semifinal at the 2024 French Open. The Spaniard won the match 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to advance into his maiden Roland-Garros final.
Alcaraz will face Alexander Zverev in the final on Sunday, June 9. The German has the upper hand in their rivalry as he leads the head-to-head record 5-4. They last faced off a few months ago at the Indian Wells Masters in the quarterfinal. The 21-year-old arned the win that day in straight sets.
