Several fans were left amused after a US Open graphic displayed an impossible feat of Jessica Pegula during one of her interviews at Flushing Meadows. The sixth-seeded American defeated Karolina Muchova to advance to the final of the New York Major.
Things didn’t go well for Pegula in the first set, as she lost to Muchova 1-6. The 28-year-old posed a challenge in the second set, leading 2-0. However, Pegula overcame that, winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 to advance to her maiden Grand Slam final.
Building on her strong form during the North American swing, Pegula captured the Canadian Open title and reached the final of the Cincinnati Open before delivering a similar performance at the New York Major. The 30-year-old has won 15 of her last 16 matches, with her sole loss coming against Aryna Sabalenka in the Cincinnati final—whom she will once again face in the US Open final.
However, the statistic was incorrectly displayed on a US Open graphic during one of Pegula's interviews post-match. It showed that she had won 14 out of her last 13 matches on tour, which was impossible. A fan later shared the gaffe on X.
The debacle left fans in stitches, with one fan pointing out that even 24-time Major champion Novak Djokovic couldn't achieve the feat.
"Even Novak can't beat that," they said.
"Novak could never, goat debate settled," another wrote.
"In America, if you are a billionaire, they let you win more matches than you've played," a fan chimed in.
Here are a few more reactions from tennis fans:
"She fought her inner Quarterfinal demons and won," a fan wrote.
"I mean Iga (Swiatek ) didn't stand a chance rly," another wrote.
"Not easy to do," a fan commented.
With her semifinal triumph over Muchova, Pegula became the oldest American woman in the Open Era to reach a maiden Major final.
Jessica Pegula looks forward to defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the 2024 US Open final
Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula in straight sets in the 2024 Cincinnati Open finals and carried a similar form in the US Open. Ahead of their rematch, Pegula expressed hope to take 'revenge' from the World No. 2 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
"I mean she showed how tough she is, and why she's probably the favorite to win this tournament. It'll be a rematch of Cincinnati, so hopefully I can get some revenge out here. But I am happy to have a day off. It's kind of crazy that we're playing each other again in the finals," Pegula said during her post-match on -court interview.
Sabalenka could pose a tough challenge for the sixth-seeded Pegula, given her 5-2 head-to-head advantage. Moreover, the World No. 2 has once again demonstrated her dominance on hard courts by reaching her second consecutive US Open final.
While the Belarusian will be aiming for her third Grand Slam title, Pegula will look to win her first on Saturday.
