Tennis fans recently reacted to Novak Djokovic having to defend more than 5000 points after losing the 2024 Wimbledon Championships title to Carlos Alcaraz. The Serb is yet to secure a title this season.
Djokovic suffered a crushing defeat in the final of the grasscourt Major, falling to third seed and defending champion Alcaraz in straight sets. He was aiming to match Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon men's singles titles and would have also wanted to secure his 25th Grand Slam title overall, but it was not meant to be.
After finishing as runner-up, the former World No.1 now faces the daunting task of defending 5300 points for the remainder of the season. The hefty point total is a result of his exceptional 2023 season, where he claimed titles at the Adelaide Open, Australian Open, French Open, Cincinnati Masters, US Open, Paris Masters, and the ATP Finals.
Novak Djokovic's string of brilliant performances last season saw him surpass Steffi Graf's record for the most weeks as World No.1 and Rafael Nadal's record for the most men's singles Grand Slam titles won. However, this season has been a stark contrast, with the Serb yet to secure a title.
Tennis fans were left shocked after learning about the 37-year-old's challenge of defending over 5000 points. They took to social media to express their opinions on the same.
One fan stated that the Serb was "cooked," while another stated that he could potentially be out of the top 5 world ranking if his current form continues.
"Omg Djokovic is so Cooked lmao 😭 ," a fan posted.
"So by the end of the year, Novak could potentially be out of the top five if this form continues," a fan wrote.
Another fan pointed out the stark contrast between Novak Djokovic's performance last year and his performance this year. The fan stated that the Serb was "unplayable" last year, winning several tournaments, and this season he is yet to win a title.
"Novak was unplayable end of last season. Never believed 10 months later he would have not won a title since," a fan posted.
One fan stated that the former World No.1 is in this problem of having to defend 5300 points due to having a brilliant 2023 season.
"Lmaooo. Djokovic is in soup. That’s what you get for having a very very successful 2023," a fan wrote.
"He was dominating but suddenly change of guards took place this year. I mean his form abruptly went down this year. I feel his loss to Jannik Sinner last year when he was leading 40-15 had match points and than lost, this made a big dent to his mental fort. Since then he is not same," a fan posted.
Some fans speculated that if Novak Djokovic ends up with no titles this season then it could prompt his retirement or a final push for success next year.
"Thats a lot! If Nole ends up with zero big title this year, will he retire or try to push back One final time with insane physical training," a fan wrote.
"Novak has to defend two masters 1000, Turin, and USO. With his current form, it is highly unlikely. I just want him win two more titles, does not matter where he wins. I don't think he is going to stop. Should start playing and win 250s or 500s if he feels like it," a fan posted.
Novak Djokovic after losing at Wimbledon 2024 final: "The level of tennis wasn’t up to par from my side"
Following his loss against Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, Novak Djokovic stated that his performance fell short of his usual standard. He also praised the Spaniard for playing exceptionally well in the match.
“Obviously it is not the result that I wanted and especially in the first couple of sets, the level of tennis wasn’t up to par, really, from my side. But credit to Carlos for playing some complete tennis," Djokovic said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
Djokovic expressed that he wanted to challenge Alcaraz and prolong the match a bit, but unfortunately, it did not come to fruition.
"I tried to push him and saved the three match points, extended the match a little bit, but it wasn’t meant to be really. He was an absolutely deserved winner today, so congratulations to him for amazing tennis,” he added.
This marked the third encounter between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz at the Grand Slam level. They have met in the semifinals of the 2023 French Open and the finals of the 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Following this defeat, the Serb's head-to-head record against the World No.3 at the Major level now stands at one win to two losses.
