Novak Djokovic made some honest remarks about Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s potential to break his records. Alcaraz, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the ATP rankings, and Sinner, who holds the top spot, have been generating a lot of buzz in the tennis world lately.
Djokovic has etched his name in tennis history with an astonishing 24 Grand Slam titles, including 10 Australian Opens, three French Opens, seven Wimbledons, and four US Opens—making him the most successful male player of all time. In the 2024 season, he added the final piece to his legacy by securing his long-awaited Olympic gold medal in Paris.
Djokovic has always embraced the new generation of players with open arms, including the likes of Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev, and Dominic Thiem. And of course, he continues to support the rise of Alcaraz and Sinner.
In an interview with GQ Sports on Thursday, January 9, the Serbian tennis star casually remarked that while his records may seem unbreakable to some, he believes that both Alcaraz and Sinner could be the ones to step into his shoes in the future.
“It’s too early. But, you know, people say my records will never be broken. I doubt that. I mean, Carlos could be already the next guy. Even Jannik." Djokovic said.
He also emphasized that if Sinner and Alcaraz prioritize their fitness and take care of their bodies, they could achieve long-term success.
“If they take care of the body, if they do things in a proper way, focus on longevity, focus on the long-term, then they can do it,” he added.
At just 21 years old, the Spaniard has already clinched four Grand Slam titles—two at Wimbledon, one at the US Open, and one at the French Open. Reflecting on this remarkable achievement, Djokovic remarked:
“Carlos has done something no one has done in history for such a young age. So the odds are with him. He is going to complete his [career] Slam very soon.”
Novak Djokovic could face Carlos Alcaraz in QF and Jannik Sinner in final of Australian Open 2025
Novak Djokovic will kick off his campaign against Nishesh Basavareddy at the Australian Open on Sunday, January 12. The duo have never met before on the ATP Tour, so it will make for an interesting matchup.
If Djokovic wins, he will then meet Pavel Kotov in the second round, followed by a possible third-round encounter with Reilly Opelka or Tomas Machac. Grigor Dimitrov or Jiri Lehecka will await him in the fourth round.
If the Serb advances to the quarterfinals, he could face his toughest test yet in a highly anticipated showdown with Carlos Alcaraz. Alternatively, he might take on Sebastian Korda or 2024 US Open semifinalist Jack Draper.
In the semifinals, the 24-time Grand Slam champion could encounter formidable opponents such as Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, or Tommy Paul. Should he reach the final, he might square off against World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, or Alex de Minaur.
