Novak Djokovic had positive words for his new coach Andy Murray after crossing the first hurdle at the 2025 Australian Open on Monday (January 13). The Serb lost the first set but completed a convincing comeback to defeat Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round of the event.

Djokovic commenced his quest to win a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title by getting the better of 19-year-old American Basavareddy. The youngster made spectators sit up and take note at the Rod Laver Arena by unexpectedly bagging the first set on his Grand Slam debut. However, the Serb roared back into the tie to seal a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win in two hours and 58 minutes.

The Melbourne Slam features a new 'coaching pod,' an area designated for coaches courtside. For Djokovic, his new coach Murray was seated in the pod imparting wisdom earned during his illustrious playing career.

After the match, during the on-court interview, the 10-time Australian Open champion was asked about Murray and how their partnership was moving. Djokovic exuded positivity in his reply.

"Obviously, thrilled to have him in my corner. It was a bit of a strange experience to have him courtside in my box. We played for over 20 years against each other at the highest level. Great to have him on the same side of the net," the Serb said.
"He gave me great advice mid match. It’s good we have an opportunity now to have allowed coaching on the same side. Yeah, some feedback, basically, and we can get our coaches to tell us what they really see from the side of the court. It’s a completely different angle when you’re watching from the side. He’s been doing really well. It’s been an enjoyable experience. Hopefully we don’t stop here," he added.

Nishesh Basavareddy was making his Grand Slam debut against the most successful man in Grand Slam men's singles history. However, the teenager battled his nerves to win the first set against Novak Djokovic. Although Basavareddy eventually lost, the Serb had kind words for his young opponent.

“He was the better player for a set and a half, he deserved every bit of applause that he got... It was a great performance. These kinds of match-ups are always tricky [and] dangerous. He has nothing to lose in his first match at a Grand Slam," he said (via ATPTour).

Djokovic was impressed by the quality of Basavareddy's shots until the very end and wished him success in his future career.

Up next for the 37-year-old is another young opponent. He will take on 21-year-old qualifier Jaime Faria in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open.
