Novak Djokovic will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics after undergoing knee surgery for an injury that forced him to withdraw from this year's French Open just before his quarterfinal match against Casper Ruud. While the Serb's presence at the Olympics is assured, there are doubts surrounding his participation in the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, which will begin on July 1.
Djokovic has had a lackluster season so far as he is yet to win a title. Despite not securing a title this year, the Serb has had strong showings in the Australian Open, Monte-Carlo Masters, and Geneva Open where he reached the semifinals. He most recently competed at the 2024 French Open, where he suffered a knee injury during his fourth-round match against Francisco Cerundolo.
Djokovic had torn the medial meniscus in his right knee which forced him to withdraw from the French Open before his quarterfinal match against Casper Ruud. After undergoing successful knee surgery, the World No. 3 has been slowly easing back into training.
It was recently revealed that Novak Djokovic, alongside Dusan Lajovic, will represent Serbia in the 2024 Paris Olympics which begins on July 26. This will mark the former World No.1's fifth Olympic appearance, having previously won a bronze medal in 2008.
Although the 24-time Grand Slam champion is confirmed to compete in the Olympics, his presence at the Wimbledon Championships, a Grand Slam event he has won seven times, remains uncertain.
Novak Djokovic: "I hope I can play my best tennis, who knows if I will get another chance to play at the Olympic Games"
Earlier this year, during a conference, Novak Djokovic discussed his upcoming participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Serb expressed that he hopes to play his best tennis in Paris, as the opportunity to compete in the Olympics only arises once every four years.
"I hope I can play my best tennis. At the end of the day, who knows if I will get another chance to play at the Olympic Games, they only come every four years," he said [via Olympics.com].
The former World No.1 stated that he is hoping to use his chance in the Paris Olympics to the best of his abilities to win a gold medal. Djokovic might not get another chance to compete in the Olympics, with the next edition scheduled for 2028 in Los Angeles.
"I said recently that I really wanted to play at least until the L.A. Olympic Games [in 2028], but you never know, at this stage. What can happen or how far I can go. I will try to use this chance as best as possible," he added.
Djokovic made it clear that he would not be participating in this year's Olympics if he did not believe that winning a gold medal was within reach. He also highlighted that it was his honor to represent Serbia on the Olympic stage.
"If I didn't think [a gold medal] was possible, I probably wouldn't be playing the Olympic Games. You have to believe that everything is possible in life. The Olympics Games are the oldest and most prestigious sporting event in the history of sport. It's a huge honour to represent Serbia at the Olympic Games. I hope I can be healthy and fit," he said.
