Novak Djokovic shared his thoughts about his goals for the upcoming Australian Open as he approaches the final stages of his tennis career. He is expected to be the seventh seed at the tournament, which will take place in Melbourne from January 12 to January 26.
Djokovic has enjoyed the most success in Australia, where he has won 10 titles so far. He has arrived in Melbourne and sat down for a conversation with The Herald Sun and said:
“Melbourne has been the most successful city or the Australian Open the most successful grand slam I’ve had in my career.”
The 37-year-old tennis legend expressed his desire to add another Australian Open title to his already impressive tally of 24 before retiring.
“I want to keep it that way, I hope to keep going. I just hope to, before I retire, get at least one more title there and that is the goal,” he said.
Djokovic is looking forward to returning to his favorite hunting ground in The Rod Laver Arena to play in front of his fans:
“I love playing in Rod Laver Arena, the atmosphere is so good - summer time - people love their sport in Melbourne and Australia and so I should look forward to going there.’’
Although Djokovic remains confident in his abilities, age seems to be catching up with him. For the first time since 2017, Djokovic failed to claim an ATP title during the 2024 season, with his only significant triumph being the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
His 2025 campaign hasn’t started on the best note either, as he suffered a quarterfinal defeat to Reilly Opelka at the Brisbane International.
Novak Djokovic backed by Serena Williams' ex-coach and Andrea Petkovic to break Margaret Court's record in Australian Open
Serena Williams’ former coach, Rennae Stubbs, and former WTA pro player Andrea Petkovic have voiced their support for Novak Djokovic as he chases a historic milestone. Djokovic, who equaled Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slams two years ago, is now aiming to claim his 25th major victory in 2025, which would set a new all-time record.
On an episode of The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, Stubbs expressed her hopes of seeing Djokovic win his 25th Major, saying:
“I hope to God he does that. Like, I’m not kidding you . If he wins the Australian Open, I would like him to drop the mic. I would really love to see Novak win one more cause God knows I want that Margaret Court record to be never talked about ever again ‘cause they changed the goal posts.”
Petkovic also shared her thoughts on Djokovic's future, predicting that he would focus all his efforts on securing his 25th Major at either the Australian Open or Wimbledon in 2025.
“So my prediction for Novak is that he will not give a flying F about any of the tournaments except for the Australian Open and Wimbledon and he will make a huge push with everything he still got left in that cute 40 year old body of his, will put everything into winning one of these, try and get to 25 and then drop the f*** out,” Petkovic said.
