Novak Djokovic is no stranger to controversy, yet the most bizarre controversies he's ever been part of have been around dubious health claims. Early in his career, Djokovic was known as a player who seemingly quit fairly easily.

He had a couple of prominent retirements, struggling to keep up with the demands of professional tennis. Then he famously switched to a gluten-free diet, and everything changed for him.

That in itself isn't strange because many have done similar things and experienced health benefits; however, the way he was diagnosed created controversy. He underwent an apparent strength test while holding a piece of bread. He failed it, and that was proof that he was gluten intolerant. That's just one of many stories where Djokovic has dipped his toes into the less scientifically proven.

He promoted a couple of things, including healing items. Recently, he did it in a pretty prominent feature for GQ. In the feature "10 Things Novak Djokovic Can't Live Without," the Serb followed in the footsteps of many athletes, sharing ten things they can't live without. One of those was a healing disc.

"Kind of hard to explain this one. It's an energetic disc that creates an electromagnetic field around it. The secret is in this pattern, and when you place it on a certain part of your body—like your stomach when you have issues—it starts enhancing the metabolic functions or reduces inflammation." Djokovic also promoted his supplement brand which he created specifically for himself.

"Serbian doctor made it for me" - Djokovic expands on healing disc

This disc isn't something you can buy on Amazon because it was created by a Serbian doctor who is also an engineer. Djokovic fully believes in its healing qualities, acknowledging in the same GQ feature that he owns several of them and carries them around everywhere, including on planes.

"A doctor I know in Serbia, who is also an engineer, created this disc for me. I have a bunch of them and I carry one everywhere, even when I fly. I put it on my head or somewhere else. You shouldn’t be having it on the body parts for too long— so like 20-30 minutes, it does its work." (11:14)

Those familiar with Djokovic won't be surprised by any of this because it’s just one of the many things he's done to better himself as a person and as a player. He doesn't mind doing things that aren't part of scientific thought, at least not yet.

It's part of why his non-vaccination created a stir among fans. Despite declaring himself that he was not against vaccines, many perceived this along with his many alternative medicine promotions as a sign that Djokovic was veering into conspiratorial territory.
