Novak Djokovic has explained his surprising behavior at the 2025 Australian Open. This came after his fourth-round match against Czech player Jiri Lehecka.
Djokovic started his Australian Open campaign with a hard-fought four-set victory over Indian-American Nishesh Basavareddy, followed by another four-set win against Jaime Faria. He then defeated Tomas Machac in straight sets to set up a clash with Lehecka.
On Sunday, January 19, the Serb advanced in his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title, defeating Lehecka 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Despite being booed by the crowd as Lehecka threatened to push for a fourth set, he stayed focused and won. However, he made an unusual move by skipping his on-court interview with Jim Courier.
Novak Djokovic later explained his decision, saying he skipped the interview due to Channel 9's journalist mocking his Serbian fans and making "insulting" and "offensive" comments about him.
"Couple days ago, a famous sports journalist, who works for official broadcaster Channel 9 in Australia, made a mockery of Serbian fans and also made insulting and offensive comments towards me and since then he chose not to issue any public apology," he said.
"I have nothing against Jim Courier neither the Australian public. It was a very awkward situation for me to face on the court today and it's unfortunate. I chose to say something to the crowd but obviously it wasn't the time and space or the situation for me to explain what I am doing right now," he added.
