Jelena Djokovic, who is married to Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic, has lauded her countrywoman Olga Danilovic's giant-killing run at the ongoing Australian Open. Danilovic, ranked No. 55 in the world, caused a massive upset on Friday, taking out the No. 7 seed Jessica Pegula in straight sets 7-6 (3), 6-1.

The Belgrade-based Danilovic has enjoyed a massively successful Australian Open, matching her best slam result by making it into the fourth round. She took down Arantxa Rus in her first outing, and Liudmila Samsonova, seeded No. 25, in the second round.

"In the back of my mind, I really believed in myself, and I came on this court to enjoy," Danilovic said in her post-match interview. "This is my first time in such a big court [such as] Rod Laver Arena," she pointed out.

She had also made the Round of 16 at last year's French Open before her run was ended by fifth seed Marketa Vondrousova. However, she failed to make the main draw of the Australian Open last year, losing in the second round of qualifiers.

Novak Djokovic's wife Jelena, who is a big supporter of Serbian tennis talent, gave a nod to her countrywoman on her success in social media. Novak, who was following the match, held aloft his arms and clapped in celebration as soon as Danilovic earned the last point to wrap up victory.

The 23-year-old Danilovic made significant strides on the WTA Tour in 2024. Danilovic won the Guangzhou Open in China, her second WTA Tour title and first since 2018. She reached her peak in the rankings, No. 51, in December of the same year.

Olga Danilovic, whose father is the former basketball player Predrag Danilovic, will face a resurgent Paul Badosa in her next match.

Jessica Pegula, after her shock exit at the hands of Serbian emerging star Olga Danilovic, said slow conditions made her life difficult at Rod Laver Arena.

"Conditions were so slow. I mean it was slower than a clay court. It felt like the balls were so heavy and that totally favored her, especially with her forehand to my backhand," Pegula explained. "I prefer faster; I think everyone on tour knows that," she added.

The 30-year-old Pegula had thrice made the quarterfinal stage at Melbourne, in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
