Novak Djokovic sent his new coach Andy Murray and his family a loving message while they were away on a skiing trip. The Serb announced last month that Murray would be joining his team as his coach for the 2025 season.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion is currently in Australia where he began his 2025 season at the Brisbane International. He is the top seed in the tournament and he started his campaign strong by defeating Australian wild card Rinky Hijikata 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 15 minutes in the first round.
During the post-match on-court interview, Djokovic spoke about Andy Murray joining his team. He revealed that Murray has not joined him in Brisbane due to a family skiing trip. He also sent his love and best wishes to the Murray family.
“He’s actually skiing at the moment, he has a family skiing trip. Sending my love to all the Murray family. I hope he doesn’t get injured, you know skiing before he comes to Melbourne. That wouldn’t be great,” he said.
The Serb also mentioned that despite Andy Murray not being in Brisbane he has been in constant touch with him. He said that it would be nice to have the three-time Grand Slam champion, who has been his long-time opponent now, on his side as a coach during the 2025 Australian Open.
“But yeah, we spoke before the match. You know we’re communicating daily. So I’m excited obviously to have him in my team, in my corner. For 20 plus years, he’s been across the net, for the first time ever he’s on the same side of the court. So it should be fun in Melbourne,” he added.
Apart from competing in the singles event at the 2025 Brisbane International, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has teamed up with Nick Kyrgios for the doubles event. They won their first-round match against Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies and will face the top-seeded pair of Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus in the second round.
Novak Djokovic will face Gael Monfils at the 2025 Brisbane International 2R
Novak Djokovic will go head-to-head with Gael Monfils in the second round of the 2025 Brisbane International. The Frenchman secured his spot in the second round of the ATP 250 hard court tournament in Queensland by defeating American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Djokovic and Monfils have faced each other a staggering 19 times on the ATP Tour, with the Serb emerging victorious in all 19 matches. Their most recent encounter was in the third round of the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, where Djokovic claimed a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory. He then went on to defeat Carlos Alcaraz in the final to take home the title.
Following the conclusion of the Brisbane International, both Djokovic and Monfils are expected to compete at the 2025 Australian Open. The former World No. 1 has an outstanding record at the Melbourne Major, having won the tournament a record 10 times. His most recent victory came in 2023 when he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. In 2024, he reached the semifinals before being defeated by the eventual champion, Jannik Sinner.
On the other hand, Monfils' best performance at the Australian Open has been reaching the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2022.
